The first thing I require each of my clients to do before even starting the design layout is to choose their appliances. Your kitchen designer will need the manufacturer's specifications to know what size to make the cabinets to accommodate them. Be aware that there is required distances needed around and island, typically 36" up to 48" depending on placements of appliances. This will dictate the size and shape of the island. Clean lines, simplicity, innovative materials like glass countertops, exotic woods or Italian veneer slab doors, flip or lift up doors can add unexpected touches to a modern/ contemporary space. Change your dining chairs to something a bit lighter? There's a bit too much black in the one room, which is noticeable because it's such a small space.

Not keen on tiles ... prefer a smooth surface with no grout lines to try and keep clean

Black kitchens are beautiful! I would look at your space and make sure you have enough light and space to pull it off, remember that dark colors can pull a room in making it look smaller, also finger prints can be more noticeable on black but i still think it would look great, especially if you have some wood or old red bricks in the space, too cool! Making a Matt black and wood handle-less kitchen shortly in our showroom but not in yet so no photo.
