Not really a fan of schist or stone and was wondering if anybody had some clever or original ideas to clad this see through fire place??
It's a renovated bungalow leading into a modernized kitchen/dining/living new oak floors, and probably alabaster walls

Well if you don't like stone, maybe clad it in horizontal wood plank. Maybe even reclaimed wood...

You can't go past stack stone for the fire place it comes in heaps of colours. But you could tile it there are some awesome wall tiles for just this purpose. Or just render it and paint it in a textured paint

I like the ideaof using either a galvanized tin or maybe a sealed rust covered steel sheathing

How do you go about getting the sealed rust option?? I've seen it on one building but other than that not used much, such a good look

The sealed rust is a paint effect. You paint the paint on and it has iron ore in it then you paint over with the rust medium and that is what creates the great effect. Ask at your nearest paint specialist

You might consider cladding your fireplace in 3D wall tiles.
