There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room.

I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed.

I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos.

The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture.

I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Get some real art in there with some color.

Hi, great windows and so much light! Sorry but I think you have one sofa too many. I would be tempted to move the 3-seater under the window. Put a 2-seater opposite (already is there) and put the wing chair where the 3-seater currently is (facing the fireplace). You have a zone around the piano, but you could turn the bookcase 90degrees so it faces the french doors, Move the piano further into the room, away from the french doors. Put your "carver" dining chairs one either side of the piano. See if you can get some lighting installed into your bookcase, and add white china/glass to bring more visual interest. And I'm sorry but the painting over the piano isn't adding to the ambience you're hoping for - I just don't think it's the right size - could you maybe move it somewhere that fits its size (under the aircon/heatpump?). I agree with others that a painting would probably be better than a mirror above the fire. Please please post "after" picture and good luck!

Thanks everyone, some very good ideas I will deffinately be trying:-) Yes I agree the picture above the piano has to go, and the furniture could do with re-arranging, even taking away one of the 2 seaters however I'm a bit sad about this as we have extended family we love having around and its nice to have a comfy seat for everyone.... And YES the bookcase does look bullied now I think about it! Not sure what I can do about getting some moulding put around the top - might be easier to buy a new bookcase (but the budget doesn't really allow for it)???

Is is possible to remove a few shelves from the bookcases to create space for larger pieces such as colourful pottery? Maybe painting the frame of the picture over the piano in a lighter colour would change the look.

Could you move the piano onto the adjacent wall and move the book case over? Maybe you could put the chair that is between the sofa and the love seat next to the bookcase. If you like the art work over the piano, try hanging it over the fireplace. It looks like a nice piece and would help save on the budget. Once you take the chair out between the sofa and the love seat and slide the sofa down, you may find that there is enough room to keep the second love seat around for your family gatherings. If the sofa is centered on the fireplace then ignore the last comment. So...then I would say get rid of the love seat near the fireplace or maybe if there is enough room slide it back a bit, but if not, then I would put the chair in place of the love seat. You're only losing one seat, so that's not to bad. I completely understand what you are saying when it comes to family gatherings and enough seating. Try some of the suggestions, post pictures as you try different things, and people will keep giving advice. Some people are harsh and not everyone understands that budgets are not endless, but overall I think everyone just wants to help.

I understand the need for a lot of seating and that is always a challenge. I'd put the 3 seater under the biggest window (where the 2 seater is) Put the 2 seater where the 3 seater is. Leave the other 3 seater where it is now. I'd put the wingback chair in the corner by the bookcase. The chair under the A/C needs to move to another room and brought in only when you need it. Would you consider painting the face of the bookcase black to balance that wall? I don't think you have to move the picture above the piano if you do that. The curtains have been addressed above and need to have some breathing room, both in how tightly they are drawn and how close they are to the furniture. Do you ever close them to cover the windows entirely? I know you said you just had them put in, but they do overwhelm the room. Personally I'd ad some color via a piece of artwork above the fireplace and a colorful rug in front of the fireplace, but it's what you want to do. I don't think I'd add any ceiling fixture, rather I'd opt for recessed lights. It is in keeping with your clean look.
