What colour curtains should we choose?

Hi there,

I'm completely torn about what colour curtains and roman blind to put in our small bedroom.

We have Resene 1/4 tea ( http://www.resene.co.nz/swatches/preview.php?chart=Resene The Range whites & neutrals (2010)&brand=Resene&name=Quarter Tea) as the colour on our walls and a beige and grey two tone sisal look carpet.

I'm after a natural and neutral look that won't make the room appear too small. I'm incredibly torn between an off-White or going with a darker muddy grey. I'm worried the off-white will make the room look too washed out and get dirty (we have 2 toddlers!!) and that the darker colour may make the room feel a bit too closed in. 3 colour options are outlined in the photos below. The photos don't quite do the colours justice I'm afraid, but it's the best I could get.

Unfortunately there weren't any other colours in-between that suited the tones of the walls and carpet! We are also getting an off-White privacy / sunshade roller blind to cover the main window which the curtains will ultimately cover when drawn.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm useless at making decisions like this!

I like the one in the large picture ,whatever you decide hang them as high as you can and further out on the window lit will make your room and window appear larger

The dark colour will provide the room with a closer enclosed space however with clever use of lighting this can be avoided, not only that but the successful implementation of a dark feature in a light tone room creates a focal point and that being said with the darker colour on the window your attention will be drawn to the view outside which it would seem is certainly one to be admired. I would personally choose the darker colour.

I like doors with panels and I like the doors to match the base boards and window + door trim (usually white). Zebra wood is very unique looking. I like art and rugs to get the attention in a room, not the doors. However, I came across gorgeous photo that appears to use flat veneer zebra wood. The baseboards are white. The multi-color slate really enhances this zebra color, too. I could not find the gray hue zebra wood. Do you have a photo or link?

All the suggestions above are perfectly good. However, when you have a house that is entirely painted, the options are so endless that it's easy to get stuck. I'd advise either finding photos of comparable homes in colors that you really love, and reproducing a similar palette on your home… or upload a picture of your house to a colorizing site, and play around with various combos. Sherwin Williams has a Color Visualizer that is decent. I don't mind a white house, but feel that the black trim is a bit harsh. On the railing especially- it feels like it is outlining itself too much. Reduce the contrast between the body and the rail and it will enhance the house rather than overwhelm it. You have a lot of choices, so just experiment and go with what resonates with you.

Now for Mr 16 months... I really can't decide. His room is going to be on the cold side of the house, with not so much sun so I want it to get that cozy sort of feeling when you come into it. Thanks for all the great ideas everyone and sorry I didn't explain the polycarbonate a bit better :) This is along the lines of what we'll be using... http://www.psp.co.nz/building-brands/corrugated-sheeting/suntuf-polycarbonate The area is an absolute sun trap and we're hoping to use it as an extension to our living space, especially on rainy days! I've just sent my husband out to get a few pots of different stains for is to try - darkest brown (cedar) and a lighter brown (rustic oak) both by Cabots + the black we already have. Hopefully we can decide between one of those! I probably should have mentioned we will have black aluminium pool fencing running along the top of the second retaining wall - so the real question is do we keep everything black (pool fencing, horizontal fence, retaining walls and pergola) or do we go with a dark (or even light) brown for the pergola and retaining walls.... We just keep going around in circles at the moment. Decisions, decisions! Thanks again :)

Great advice! Thank you so much. I hadn't thought about the darker colour drawing the focal point to the view outside, which I must admit is rather lovely. In regards to hanging the curtains from the ceiling to the floor, I asked the consultant if we should look at raising the curtains and she didn't seem to think there was much point as it is such a large window anyway. It doesn't bother me either way but I'd like to make sure that we maximise the illusion of space as much as possible. Thanks again

Re-iterate what has been said - darker colour, to give warmth and depth to the window.

I agree with that kind of view why bother with curtains, no one will sit in the tree with binoculars. It would be lovely to wake up with nature. If sun damage is an issue, there is a roll up - see through mesh material. Some museums use it on their windows.

I would think about hanging them higher. Just google "how to hang curtains" and you will see lots of images of hanging curtains at ceiling height

I'd like to suggest that the most important thing here is more about who is using the room. If It's a child's bedroom use lovely children's curtains - there's so much around and any pattern could pick up the wall and floor colours. If a guest room and not used often I'd suggest a beautiful velvet or good quality Linen and forbid the little ones from going in to that room!!!!!! alternately a blind attached at floor level could be raised or lowered so the view is still there but with privacy from waist height perhaps. Thanks again everyone. Some really valuable (and also some very flattering) comments.

You can't tell from the picture but we have a neighbours main living area and decks probably only 3-5m away and our bedroom overlooks a shared driveway about 20m away, so rather than giving a free 'show' to the neighbours, a sunscreen/privacy blind it is.....and yes it will be one of the mesh ones so we can still see out albeit with reduced transparency.

Thanks again everyone you've really helped me make this decision - darker curtains it is!
