Help! I think i made a mistake with my splash back colour!

Hi, I love this colour but kind of wishing I had gone with pale grey! Does anyone have any idea of how I could tone down the effect of the blue? It is a small apartment, pale floorboards, white walls throughout. I am wondering if one of my issues with it is that I do not like the bitty nature, the way it makes the rest of the wall stand out in contrast. Shall I paint the wall behind and the wall above the cabinet pale grey to tone down the blue a bit? I only got it installs yesterday so part of my not liking it much might be shock, can not afford to change it, hoping I will grow to love it but any thoughts would be appreciated, Thanks!

If you add a roman shade and some accent colors such as appliances, your 'eye' will be drawn away from backsplash, but in a good way. Like giving backsplash some friends to play with.

Hi, I know there are so many things to take into account and it's hard to get perspective from a photo. The white you can see is an extension with building paper, and the red is the existing building which is two story. The exterior is wide weatherboard planking, the windows are silver aluminium with very little trim. The doors in the front of the picture are French doors from bedrooms that will open to an enclosed courtyard ( yet to be built of course) The roof will be a light grey/brown but you won't see it much because of the flat roof style. There will be decking and ballustrades covering half of the new extension.

I never love open shelving in a modern kitchen they are dust and grease traps but I would hang horizontal glass front cabinets and paint that wall some awesome color ,run your backsplash up to bottom of window all across. If you have space make the island top larger and paint out the other wall of cabinets to match main ones. The island top could be something much different than the others

    What colours do I use?

    Q

Hi anne, that's what I was originally thinking, my issue is what colour I use for the 'pop' :) I keep coming back to a teal/turquoise colour (it's one of my favourite colours!!), I love blues, purples, teal/turquoise - many on here have suggested yellow but I'm really not sure about it. Here in New Zealand we're in Autumn, nearing Winter so uncertain about the yellow. I found these cushions that I've fallen in love it, and wondering how I could make these work.. do I try teal and mustard together, as an interior designer suggested?

What? I love it! Gray is a dismal cliché these days. My joke is we may as well go around to very forum and tell people paint it gray, because that's what they always end up doing. Gray shows nothing personality wise and certainly doesn't make you smile! You blues so happy! Maybe splashes of yellow? Even happier!

Maybe if you were to paint the wall above the cabinets a darker blue. Do not do this w/o painting 2 foot X 2 foot sample poster boards first though. I'm sure you will grow to love this bright cheerful color. I agree with adding some other colors with it. Install under cabinet LED lighting as well & maybe a string of LEDs above the cabinets. Try it you may love it.

Thanks for your comments, under cabinet lights would be great I think and might break up the block of colour a bit, also adding a few extra bits and pieces of bright colours as company for the blue is a good idea. Thanks for tip re painting the wall, to paint on tester posters first, very sensible. I think I need to change the lightbulbs of the kitchen light to white light, the yellow light is not helping much. Yay, feeling much better about my choice now, and happy that I did not go with safe but boring grey. Thanks!

Add the same vibrant shade of blue in a roman shade.

Normally I react negatively to a vibrant color backsplash, but in this space it works. The previous comments are all great advice. Post when you're done.

I like it! Just tie it in with dish towels, rugs, etc

My concern would be the microwave up so high. I hope you are tall;)

If you could put the microwave elsewhere and fill that space with some colorful cookbooks or dishes it will break up the white and tie it all together. Definitely add a new window covering in a fun print that has some blue in it. And add something colorful to the counter on the other side.

I think it is a nice backsplash!

Thanks all, good point about the microwave, it is a bit high for me really, I am not very tall! It is manageable though, and does not fit anywhere else. Perhaps I could paint the wall behind the microwave the same blue or get another section of splash back made, just to break it up a bit. I would test it out first mind...

I could then and add a couple of colourful books along the side of the microwave to further break it up so that it is less of a stark transition between white and blue. Good thinking re window, I might get a nice vase or something.

Take everything off the counter except the stainless/silver tone items, and take away the stuff next to the microwave. This style of cupboard calls for a minimalist look. The silver tone stuff can stay because it blends well with the faucet. Hope is you have enough storage space for the toaster, cutting board, etc, and you can store them out of sight when not in use. The backsplash is GORGEOUS.

Thanks, ohpokey, I'll try that and rephotograph, and add a bit more of the room in for you all. I have purchased a new toaster in a nice dark grey and I'll try and find a place to hide the cutting board.

I'd paint the microwave cubby lime green or orange or yellow. The magenta cutting board looked great against the blue. Oh, and see how much better/brighter your kitchen looks with the grey all gone. Trust yourself!

What a wonderful transformation. Your kitchen is beautiful. I think part of the problem with the blue right now is that it is the only blue in the room. You do need to repeat it elsewhere in the room whether you add another color other than the blue or not. The kitchen has contemporary lines, so I would stick to that for accents. Not sure what is next to the counter - a cabinet? But it looks like that area that is next to the counter might also be a place for art of some kind that could incorporate the blue, as well as other colors if you wish to include them. But really a great job!

It's beautiful! I hate grey and am doing my office in white/peacock blue now so I'm biased, but I think with a few accents to tie it together and a few days to get used to the newly bright color, you will see what we all see and fall back in love!

I am so glad you didn't go with grey. That blue is so vibrant against the white. Grey is cool, but it is pretty much the color of death.

LOVE the blue. Notice how the yellow flowers from Lucidos brings color around in a nice way. Adding a roman shade in a bright coordinating print would be great, too.

The blue is awesome (grey is too trendy)! The reason it stands out to you is perhaps because it's the only real colour there. Bring in the blue in a window treatment, a small appliance that sits on the counter, a pretty tray or area rug. Also, it is more appealing often if there are more than 2 colours - so right now you have a white and blue colour scheme - bring in red or orange or fushia - something from the other side of the spectrum (like you did with the yellow flowers but in a more permanent way)!

I love it - sometimes good to get away from everybody else's boring all the same as your neighbour type look - this color ties in with accents of lime green, red, gray or yellow - very fun & refreshing Have fun

Love the blue and agree with the printed Roman shade. Lime green or yellow walls would be gorgeous, but it looks like an open floor plan so I could see where that might be too much for most people. Maybe a pale yellow based white for the walls, or a gray/white?

You could move the microwave to the peninsula at a more comfortable height, either on the wall or under the counter at the end cap.
