Maintenance only needed such as repairing ridge caps or replacing broken tiles. Tiles last for hundreds of years with almost no maintenance.

Once painted it needs ongoing work. The paint doesn't stick that well and only lasts for a few years. It gets hammered by the weather too much. It looks crap after a few years.

Looks great against your brickwork, driveway, etc. so leave it as is. I'd kill for a great roof and the stunning brickwork you have.

My sisters home has terracotta tiles and they were also told they cannot be painted...

I also like how yours are currently! It looks as though you are getting ready to paint the fence posts? That finish may bring the eyes down to focus there and not on the roof. ;)

Thanks for the feedback all! Yes we are having the fence, garage door, etc all painted. Hopefully it does detract from the almost bright orange roof tiles.

Some further reading I've done today suggests that non-glazed tiles (which ours are) are OK to paint when done properly, but apparently glazed tiles won't hold the paint.

We'll see how the fence update etc looks before leaping into the roof!

Another vote for NOT painting your terracotta roof tiles. I have seen many poorly painted roofs, peeling faded and just awful! Why spend good money on that when they look just fine as they are.

Curious what colour would you paint it. oh and YES you can paint your roof, but you need to clean and seal it first..

Check your roof for any broken or cracked tiles and replace them. To repair any damaged mortar around the ridge capping, remove the capping and apply new mortar and put the capping back in place. Make sure the mortar is dry before you start painting.

and use a airless spray gun to paint.

Please, please, please don't have your terracotta tiles painted. Terracotta tiles are beautiful as they are. Make sure they are well maintained but please don't paint them.

Change the trim colour to blue. Blue tones down orange, trust me, it works, use a mid blue like this

I do like that blue chook but it wont tone the orange down but quite the opposite. But it will act as a contrast but I would go for something a liitle less intense.

I am not sure that painting terracotta roof tile is the best idea. I was doing research as I was getting mixed answers and learned that Terracotta is very porous. Even if you paint the top of the tile, moisture can be sucked in from underneath and cause the paint to flake off.
