There is the "refacing" option. If the design and placement are acceptable (and they must be since you are wanting to paint) then why not consider new doors and drawer fronts in any style you choose. This is done by a refacing professional for much less money, time, disruption to life than tearing out and starting anew and yet gives an entirely updated look. I have not had this done, but only know someone who did. And she was very pleased.
