I am thinking of using black chequerboard patterned lino in the bathrooms ? I have always used tiles in the past and get tired of grout looking yucky, any one done this and how did you find it?
I think it's a capitol idea. Very practical, easy to clean and can be quite pretty. The linoleum today is great and but it has gotten a bad rap design wise. Don't do the 12" peel and stick though - a full sheet. The peel and stick cracks look unsightly and end up looking like dirty grout lines. Here is a photo of linoleum sheet.
Ditto what Darzy said. Today's sheet vinyl is like nothing of old. In our house previous owners tiled the bathrooms, probably for resale, and I ripped it out and replaced it with some modern looking, thick sheet vinyl prior to moving in. Looks nice, easy to clean, softer to stand on and much warmer than tile. Plus there are no awful grout lines to clean. I couldn't tell it at the time from the sample, but the pattern I picked actually mimics tile and I've seen nearly identical looking tile in stores now. Could care less what others think, I'm pleased with it.
Lino has been used in bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and entranceways for 150 years (it is the THAT old...yep). The traditional checker board (black/white) is quiet "hot" in many areas of N. America...especially when a "retro" theme has been brought in (think 60's Diner).
Lino is the old fashioned "vinyl" before plastics were invented. Then plastic was invented and people switched to "vinyl". Now people are moving away from plastics ('cause we've learned a thing or two about the environment) and are going back to the tried and tested Linoleum (Marmoleum = brand name for lino).
Lots of fun in the black and white checkers! I think you'll like it.
Okay, maybe it's sheet linoleum and not vinyl I have then. Thought they were more or less the same thing, so I use the terms interchangeably. (Thanks for enlightening me Cancork-- always learn a lot from your posts and this is no exception.) But whatever it is, it's way better than the old stuff, so go for it Manawa!
