Now you women know that you have a better idea about this sort of thing then men,,, but saying that I know there are some very clever chaps out there,, from my perspective although people say this type of carpet is "old fashioned" at the end of the day it's you that has to live with it, and if you like it then that's all that matters, we are all too hung up on what other people think, I love the pattern and colours as an object but it is too fussy for my taste in the house,, now my workshop would be another matter,,,, sorry just a joke. Looking at the very top picture i think what looks like a mid grey looks really good, I also think that you should avoid any furniture which is patterned just keep to plain colours, avoid reds and pick out the lighter colours in the carpet, curtains should be very light in weight flimsy and delicate and to the floor, a lighter shade of that lilac would be nice i think.

I will try to put a photo of my curtains to give an example of the relationship of colour and the connection that curtains to the floor make, other then that,, good luck with your choice, i am sure you will be able to get some ideas from all the threads

chookchook, that's right, everything by my grubby hands, but the curtains are my wife's creation, all the way from Russia but she says the material is available from most of europe, she call's it "organza" not sure about the spelling but pronounce as it is spelt, or gan za, very light but even with the lights on at night, you cannot see through it.

Vitriol means malicious, malice, throwing hate, there is none of that on this thread or anywhere that I have seen on the Aussie site. There have been a couple of trolls full of malice on the US site, all removed by Houzz. No one here frightens me, like them. People who say they don't like the carpet are expressing a design opinion. It is not personal.

Agree chook chook2. Our Aussie humour by its very nature is to take the mickey out of each other in well intentioned way & i think most Aussies get that & know the difference between having a bit of fun & being malicious.

One troll posted raw meat carcasses, now that was vitriol.

Nancy I was reiterating a sentiment expressed by another Houzzer further up the thread who felt there were unnecessary comments with a negative content which she considered to be vitriolic.

Perhaps you missed it, apologies if you took my comment personally. Some of the posters on this thread enjoy stirring the pot & that is the nature of a public forum ... off topic diatribe is a waste of Houzz time IMO

Thankfully other posters showed how they wanted to actually help the OP through her dilemma which is the spirit I support.

Kathy, have you decided just how you will use the rooms, how much furniture you need, as in how big a lounge, will you have a TV in there, how many people you wish to sit at a dining room table, etc. A blank canvas is great but only you know your needs. The green couch looks rather small and I'm assuming you may want more seating so finding something to compliment it may give you more problems. Would you have room for it in the study? If you don't find a place you like for the clock, it could always go in the entry too.

Actually I like your Summer Bouquet carpet, a house down the road from me had the exact same carpet and at the time when I saw it I thought it was sweet. You just have to work with it and keep the furnishings simple. I would pick out one of the colors and get a plain rug to cover some of the carpet so it is not quite so in your face. Once the furniture is the room there is distraction from the carpet and a good deal of the carpet will be covered.

Ps I prefer the Summer Bouquet carpet to the carpet you have in the other rooms. I would actually pull up the other carpet and leave just the Summer Bouquet! Does your husband love all the carpet or just the Summer Bouquet?

Hi Kathy, so thrilled to hear my comments got you started thinking of the big picture, it has been a pleasure working with this. When you are starting totally from scratch like this it is easy to become too close to the issues and the brain becomes overloaded so you can't see the woods for the trees.

I think this is also a classic example of why I always tell people to live in a house for a year before beginning to decorate, as hard as it is to be patient and wait, you do need to get the feel for a house and relate your lifestyle to it.

I do like your idea of splitting the room into two areas, the room looks big enough to give you this option, and to me intimate spaces within a room create a more welcoming and homely feel. When you have a good idea of the furniture you would like, put what you have in the room and measure anything else before you buy it, use newspaper or cardboard boxes the size of the pieces and put them around the room to ensure you are going to get the desired result. It can be so easy to over or under estimate just how much space furniture will take up.

Sorry the green lounge in the study didn't work out, but glad this has helped you see options. Just my personal opinion, one of my joeys had a lovely old grandfather clock in her lounge room and while it was a beautiful piece of furniture to look at, I just found it a little on the intrusive side - with its constant chiming it just didn't make the room feel relaxing, one was just so aware of the passing of time. Of course this can be advantageous when certain rellies visit. She ended up moving hers to her entrance foyer where it was a stand out feature and the lounge room became so much more relaxing.

Love to see some photos of your landscaping.

If you haven't completed things yet. I would use the soft yellow colour along with creams but not yellow creams. A chesterfield look but not so heavy. Maybe linen or velvet A plain rug in the sitting area. Glass and bronze. Sheer curtains in soft grey. Soft a feminine look

C'mon guys, give the guy a break. Remember, everything old is new again every 20 - 30yrs! This carpet is irreplaceable in quality and style.

the gold/mustard colour in the carpet is gorgeous, perhaps this colour palette will suit?

Suggesting that you buy a heap of furniture to replace the carpet seems like spending a lot of money to save a little - for a look you don't want cos the carpet will still be there. So, ask hubby - can we lift the carpet from the living areas at least, and save on the furniture? Unless you were going to spend thousands on furniture anyway. What a post - you got the Houzzers rockin'!

Queenie, she has no furniture so is starting from scratch and husband will not be moved.
