small bathroom - adding a bath for the kids

we have one small bathroom (2.5m (8.2ft) long by 1.65m (5.4ft) wide) for a family of four. Our two children are aged two and 3 months so it would be handy to be able to bathe them in a bath. There is technically enough space along the rear wall to fit a bath (1525mm). We would keep the shower head etc. Our main concern is that the room will be too cramped. Any thoughts? If we do go ahead any suggestions on how to style the space to match the tongue and groove walls and pedestal basin that will stay?

No, there is not enough room for a tub.

I have abathroom that exact size we have a tub/ shower along the back wall that is 30x 60’ a toilet next to the tub along the 8’ wall and sink in a small vanity next to the toiletso yes it can be done afloor plan would help though since my door in in the opposite 5 ‘ space and it will depend on how the plumbing is laid out in yours. As for the wall finish you can probably find beadboard that would work

I think the first layout is fine. You might want to consider moving the door for the storage room of the master bedroom so that it opens into the hall. That way the kids can use it for overflow storage. Also, that hallway is big enough that I think it could hold a large armour, providing more closet space. (There's no need to sleep in the same room as your clothes, so long as they're not too far off.) Also, don't forget that while the drawing shows kids in double beds, this need not be the case, so there will be more room for furniture (dressers or whatever) in their rooms. Finally, that step to bedroom 4 will not be odd at all. I've seen it in other homes. It looks clumsy in the drawing but it isn't. What you'll see when you come up the stairs is a bedroom door on a slight diagonal. It's only an odd jagged step if you walk like a robot, in straight lines along the wall, which is what your eye is doing on the drawing but you won't do in real life.

Just wanted to post the most recent plan that incorporates all of the suggestions that I have received from the very helpful people on the Internet! Changes made: - added an extra bathroom on far left of the house near kids bedrooms - changed the toilet/main bathroom to move the shower over to the toilet room so that we could have 2 separate kids showering at a time (without coming into our room - although that remains and option) - moved the door to the library so that it doesn't look into the toilets/bathroom - optimised the space in our bedroom by moving walk in closet and bathroom around. This modification even allowed us room for a tub in the bathroom a so thankful for that suggestion! Now we just have to find room in the budget lol Questions: - when you walk into a bathroom, do you prefer to walk into a shower (from the door) or into a toilet? What would you prefer visible from the door itself? Logically you are going to use a toilet 9 times out of 10 so you would think that should be there first, but there is something odd about walking past a door and just seeing a toilet there... Thoughts? - is there enough room in the 2 bathrooms we created by joining the toilet and main bathroom? Dimensions are 3m by 2m (roughly) and with a shower coming out about 1m and the vanity about 550mm, that leaves more or less 1.45m to walk around, surely sufficient? If there are any other suggestions or thoughts on what you would do if this was your home we would greatly appreciate the feedback. Thanks you all so much in advance!

I agree with emily. if you want leave connections and/or a little extra room for what you don't want, but feel you may need for resale. I think the tub is a pretty important item. wet room not at all, and shower is give or take. i would prefer a big shower and a tub for soaking in, but I have always had the combo. I remember my mom built during big wet bar craze, she did not care for one. had space built, capped off connections and use as a closet. Now it is 35 years later, everyone wants to buy and tear down. Darned if you do, darned if you don't. i agree, I would also really like the separate toilet, we are not share everything people.

A small sink would fit in the second floor plan w/c. its 2.8mx 1.4m so definitely enough room. If we use the last floor plan with separate w/c then it opens up the bathroom to be 2.7mx 3.2m which for New Zealand standards is a big bathroom for a shower, bath and vanity. I'm still trying to decide if the space for the dining and kitchen areas are big enough?

I understand your need to bathe your little people but I would not change a thing in this bathroom. What I would do is find a bathing station that could be placed in the shower temporarily until your little folks are no longer little, By the way, bath tubs regardless of the lovely ads that show sumptuous bathing areas as components of enormous and well appointed master bedrooms, are passe. A great idea 150 years ago and for the most part the only reasonable and effective solution. Today, bathing in most homes happens very infrequently and adding a tub to your space would be the tail wagging the dog. Keep the nice space you have created and add a temporary bathing solution. A 5 by 8 foot bathroom is an average size for a house built in the US after WWII. When was your place built? Make a floor plan and talk to a professional bathroom designer. There should be a range of options to fit your budget. My guess is that the room used to have a bathtub.

I am going to have to disagree with Mark Sidell. I'm not a pro but I would not buy a house without at least one tub. I can't imagine bathing kids regularly without one. And many adults (me included) do like having a nice place to soak, whether in a nice soaker in the master bath or in a secondary bathroom. I think you would add value as well as functionality for your family if you can change out to a tub/shower combo.
