Maybe it's your photo but they look fine. You do need some pattern & texture on the bed. What are you using for throw pillows & a bed throw?

The colours work well. Try adding cushions, throw and lamp shades in greys and beige to layer the colours. I think your curtains also need a couple more hooks

Thanks so much for the advice. Cushions, throws etc are 'stage 2' (I wanted to get the curtain colour right first) but I'll keep in mind your suggestions. Thank you. I love it. The colour and the finish. I am looking for something very similar in our room as I think that colour is so versatile without looking too off the shelf.

I like the curtains and blind, maybe you could add some nice contrasting tie backs and match them to a throw, runner or pillows on the bed. They seem to go well with the carpet. It's the age old brown / wood meets grey ( bed problem ). Some greys do not work well with brown, one is a cool colour, one is a warm colour and they don't gel well. Consider having the bed painted in White / Ivory or Grey tone to bring everything together! Then get your accessories sorted with a good contrast, such as Green, Raspberry or Blue / Aqua tones.

Looks good to me. Perhaps like others have said some small touches of texture or colour on the bed.

I have dark / slate grey settee with walnut coffee table & TV stand on a biscuit (beige!) carpet. They do work well together and i have thrown coordinated raspberry rug, tartan throw and cushions to brighten it all up - really pleased with the combo & look .., go for it!!

Don't panic, looks as if you've made a grey-t start! I think it's simply unfinished: have you thought of treating yourselves to some luxurious, colourful bedlinen in a contrasting colour? Turquoise? Burnt orange? Oh and incidentally, what's the tee shirt over the picture hiding? Whatever it is, pick out a colour and build on it. Good luck!

What about using window film on the window?

I like your curtains. If it was me, i'd hem them to just 0.5 cm off the floor (leave them hanging and use wundaweb with the ironing board right beside the window...15 min job)! I'd then paper the wall behind the bed in a pale coloured geometric with grey through it. Take a colour from the paper for lampshades and a throw. Ta da!

Wow - thank you all so much for your comments. I can't believe so many of you have taken the time to respond. Thank you! Funnily enough I have a raspberry mohair throw that usually sits on our bed which didn't make it into these photos. It's now back on the bed and does look pretty good :)

I also interchange the White quilt with a bright multi coloured one which has light greys amongst many other colours. It also looks great too.

I think the comment about "wood meets grey" was bang on. That's exactly what I was thinking but I think I've now got my head around it, especially now that I have a vision of using grey accents in the cushions etc. I must admit I'm not the most creative type when it comes to colour and all your comments have been a huge help. Thank you.

And now that I've very definitely decided to keep the curtains I'll be raising the curtain track to bring them up a bit off the floor.

@mrowatt - I just had to google what wundaweb was! That looks like a much better option than paying the ridiculous price I was quoted to take them up. I was even contemplating trying to remember how to sew and then decided that rehanging the curtain track would be the easier of the two options ;)

This however, looks so simple even I'll even be able to do it. Now I just need to see if wundaweb (or similar) is available in NZ.

Iron on hemming works wonderfully. So easy! Done it on loads of curtains. To make the curtains look a bit individual, how about sewing colourful (or just plain white) buttons along the top. Easy simple effective.

Just out of interest - you have a roller blind and curtains. Presumably you are using the curtains for black-out purposes (to sleep) as the roller blind seems to be see-through. Have you considered a black-out roller blind - available in many colours, including silver? We have installed a silver total blackout blind here as you can see from the picture it darkens the room immediately the blind comes down - we also need vertical blinds as the flat gets very hot, and the blinds deflect the heat. However you could have a neater window with just the roller blind. The curtains do seem to take over the room, so I can understand your concern. Same goes for the window above the bed - neat roller blind - silver colour but black-out for sleep. Colour for the room can then come in the throw/cushions etc. Good luck.

We are big fans of roller blinds and have them in the majority of our house. However I much prefer the feel of luxury and comfort curtains offer, especially for our master. I find rollers a bit sterile / hard (no offence intended!). The roller we have in the bedroom is for privacy and to act as a sunshade as we get full afternoon sun. It's down most of the time but yes, we need Blockout for sleeping :)

Long story behind the curtain colour we chose is that they were the only readymades which came with a matching roller, to go above the bed. We then trialled the roller blind above our bed and found it still allowed a small amount of light through at the edges, which would be eliminated with a roman. Our neighbours living is behind the window and they don't have curtains which means the light comes directly through this window until about midnight!!

So now after having gone down this route with the curtain colour to have a matching roller, it turns out we could have in fact had any colour of curtains as we now need to have a custom roman blind made! Talk about irony!!

Blinds2Go are spot on about length and cheating by raising the rail rather than hemming. Re: your T-Shirt arrangement - you need to lose this, everyone's being far too polite - raise your standards when in doubt! For this I would highly recommend a roller blind or roman blind - Blinds2Go are very good (we use them a lot for clients) and their choice is excellent - they do blackout versions which would work for your bedroom. Plus they are very inexpensive and great choice so have a look at their website.

Hey, amazing view from your bedroom! The curtain and bed don't go well. I would choose a brown stripe curtain and make some bed cushions using the curtain material too. These will bring life to the room.

There are some great comment here, but my take on this would be if you are going custom to take your time and look around. Many designers offer different takes on each person's preference. The colours you have are good but I'd personally would opt for a more warmer cream, with a self print pattern. I would also suggest pinch pleated curtains and not pencil pleat as you have currently, pinch pleated curtains will give you uniformed pleats from top to bottom.

In addition to this I would suggest you use blackout linen to prevent light to enter the room, and possibly interlining so that you retain some thermal properties in your fixtures. Having custom made curtains are a lifetime choice for most customers, take your time and don't settle for the first company you come across.

The space above your bed i would possibly add a sheer fabric roman blind which is slightly see through but enough to give you privacy if you bedroom is situated on the ground floor. You can also get the a roman blind to match your new curtains if you'd like a more repetitive theme in your bedroom. I would suggest if you do opt for a roman blind, and you are looking for a good qualities add blackout linen.
