How can we decorate around this wallpaper pattern?
Hi, we put up some wallpaper on the main wall of our bedroom a couple of years ago and have found it really hard to find bed coverings, accessories, a rug and furniture to tie in with so it's just sort of sitting there and we're at a bit of a loss. It was quite expensive so we're not keen to take it down...yet! As you can see it's quite "busy" and from certain angles, the silver tones reflect light in a cold way. I'm not really keen on the luxe look with its metallics and mirrors; I think that would make it look a bit tizzy and even colder. How can we add warmth and colour but avoid clashes?

8 years agoAdd a lovely upholstered bedhead (in natural linen) to your bed. This will break up the pattern, add warmth and texture to your room. Crisp white linens layered with greys, duck egg blue and natural linen would complement your wall paper perfectly. Stay clear of any patterns. (note photo credit : www.designlibrary.com.au). Comments (121)I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. Comments (22)As chookchook said in her recommendation about painting, put a drop cloth on the floor. Get a very safe ladder. remove the lightbulbs, and cover the outlets. Turn off the electricity to the chandelier. Then spray it with a mild cleaner (I use one I found at Target that's basically water with vinegar, until it's dripping wet. Start at the bottom and work your way up, so you don't have dirty spray dripping on the bottom of the chandelier.Work your way up and down until the dripping spray is clean. The chandelier may be gorgeous and expensive, but it seems totally out of place in the architecture of the room--more at home in a chalet than a sunny room with a window wall. Comments (10)I love that colorful floral!! it almost has a 40 vibe, and glamorous - I think it would look great in small toilet, maybe matte gold color mirror frame (and everything else white). The other floral is more retro - I prefer the glamorous florar. For the bathroom, if its a paper wallpaper I wouldn't use it beause of the moisture from showers might have the paper corners come off, and you can't really clean it - so I would skip wallpaper there. I love wallpaper and the drama it gives, but it has it challenges. But I like your choises so far, so you are on the right track. Comments (6)I read an interesting comment somewhere, where a lady invited a group of her friends over to lovingly point out all the problems they saw (through fresh eyes) with her home on preparation for sale. She said she was surprised at marks and damage that she had lived with for so long she no longer noticed them. We "owner built" a home previously, and when we came to sell 7 years later, we painted the garage and did those jobs that we had put off, and it became sad to finally see her at her best, at the end, when we could have been living in a completely finished home all that time.
