8 years agoWhat is the style of kitchen? ie. Modern/contemporary, industrial, traditional?
I'd take a look at images of "open island benches". Support is much like variety of dining table styles.
This is an example (not stone) that looks quite modern. Narrow storage at one end, square column support at the other.

And this one uses waterfall edge at one end. You could possible go with slimmer cabinet then shown. Like a bookcase or wine storage.

If I were going to do it again I would have pressed for someone with expertise to cut them. You can see in the image that the facing is not made of the stone peak, because too much was broken during the cutting to make the mitered edge. Comments (40)We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Comments (51)A very simple layout keeping the floor space within the kitchen, the WIP takes up a lot of space with not much gain, The broom cupboard could be moved to the Laundry/entrance, narrow. If the wall has been bumped out to the eaves on the deck side giving an extra 300 depth to the kitchen you could make the island 2700 x 1200 and all drawers. How about doing something like this (see pic) but using a normal mirror as the back piece. It would reflect the floors and make the island (or return bench?) appear more open then it actually is.
I'm not sure if a smoke mirror has been used here or just a high gloss panel.I would actually allow for more storage anyway, even if you don't envision you'll use it at this point. As they say, "you can never have enough storage".
