Help! Furniture shuffle

Hi, after shuffling my open plan living-dining-tv-kitchen room, I am trying to create a morning and afternoon tea spot in front of my book case.... It has good light and sun, but the space is a narrow long one with a hall like feel with two floor surfaces, concrete and carpet.
Any ideas for buying furniture or moving what we have? I can't afford to change the carpet.

Why don't you get some carpet squares - maybe in different colors and extend your "area" with them. Perhaps primary colors would appeal to the little ones. Paint the coffee/play table top with chalk/magnetic paint - black
isn't the only color available. Get a couple of swivel gliding rockers with a foot stool for comfort and a great place to snuggle with the kids or put your feet up.

love the furniture mix and the concrete floor. this might sound an odd question but can you move the carpet or is it in the floor? could you send a pict taken from the bookcase into the room also,please

I would place the sofa facing the fireplace either with access to what's behind the draperies or not, and put the tv where the chair is--roughly. On the far end I'd arrange a small conversation/reading/activity area. IE:2 chairs, a table and a lamp or a small activity table with a hanging lamp. Of course, seeing the scale of your new furniture, once you receive it will help. I just hope you have selected comfortable furniture in a smaller scale than what you have.

Thank you all so much many of you suggested darkening the ceiling and leaving the beams the way it is to avoid too much work. What color did you guys had in mind?? isn't a lighter color suppose to open the room? Talianko and Hyde Evans and Shauna? ( I preferably will love a rustic lighter wood look, and the beams but does sound like a mission to get it done as sanding varnish on the ceiling might take me forever but if I get brave enough I might do it Sstar. Brio I do so want those curtains gone they are shocking :)you haven't seen the outdated blue couch yet... but I have to decide in the colors of the walls first :) I am inclined to have a rustic look for furniture... more like farm style and I also like wash off colors...my next vibrant color that i want to add is yolk yellow ( don't roll your eyes that will be in a cushions or a vase a picture) I am very impressed with all your answers and thank you all so much for taking the time to help a girl out :)

would put the little table and chairs lenghtwise in front of the bookcase and get a'"grown-up"table,like a terrastable
and put the other chairs around next to it...here is a pict. of the table i would go for and if you cant move the carpet would get another to go along side it ina different style,like this ikea one

thank you for the pict...the difference the sunshine makes,on the other pict. it all looked so grey....still cant see wether you could turn the rug or if its a square,love all the soft browns

I think 2 matching chairs facing each other with an ottoman between would accomplish a beautiful reading/conversation area. The child's table could be set up in another close by area.

Thanks guys, I love the idea of the two matching chairs and ottoman. The kids are nearly grown out of the "little/coffee table" the floor tiles sound fun... we are in New Zealand and they aren't a big thing here, so I had never considered it. I'm thinking of introducing teal, to contrast to the red in the rest of the room (you can't see in the pics, but I have a massive red painting and a red rug in the tv nook.

There are small ottomans that you could nest under the coffee table and only pull out when needed. That way you could move your coffee table up onto the carpeted area. By the way I LOVE your concrete floors.

If your flooring is concrete, you can have it engraved to take the attention from other areas and still make the place elegant like on this picture. This was just an ordinary gray boring concrete, acid stained and engraved.
