Hi there - thanks for your comments. Yes, this deck has a retractable awning above the pergola beams... it is mostly for sun shade, but also protects from light showers. This one came from Home Plus, but you can also get them from the likes of Cool Awnings or Rollerflex. Hope this helps! CAAHT

Folding lateral arm awnings as shown in the pic are only designed as CAAHT states for light rain and must have a minimum pitch on the arms for rain water to drip off the front edge. Fabric used on folding lateral arm awnings is water resistant / water repellant. Should you need a product for heavy rain, and a fabric or system that is waterproof, you can consider an all in one system such as a retractable pergola patio and deck cover system or a rotating louver system such as those in the pics and links below.
