I need help and advice for my old cork floor.

I have a large kitchen/laundrey floor of cork that is well past its use by date. It has already has been resanded. Adjacent is a conservatory of 300mm2 square black slate tiles which lie much higher. I am thinking to over lay similar sized black vinyl tiles to give some continuity. This may get me to keep the warmth of the cork and its resilience and lift the height. However I have been told I must remove the cork first. Any comments on this?
