Dark cabintry in Kitchen, help with colour
We're building a new house and I would like a two tone kitchen with Classic white matt cabinets at the top and dark cabinets in laminate at the bottom. I'm having trouble finding the right laminate colour though. I don't want it to be black, but more like chocolate. Similar to attached photo, maybe slightly lighter. Thanks

Comments (18)Hello Marcelle, I am an interior designer . I can tell you a simple inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen. Looking at the photo you sent the different cabinet heights , and all the objects on the stove wall are very busy . Your modern house is wanting a cleaner , simple look. I would lower the small cabinets so that the top is at the same height as the others in the room. And put doors on , that will hide the clutter. Next I would do a tile backsplash above the stove , up to the same height. The whole kitchen will be pulled together by the continuous top line. There is a small light wood cabinet with baskets in the foreground . I would paint it white , or the same dark accent color of the cabinets you have. Comments (40)We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. Comments (1)Teal sounds beautiful for your splashback, I love vibrant and bright colours in the kitchen - you never see them enough! I think your worries are right as well, dark carpet and a dark bench would be too much darkness - a lighter benchtop would work well with the other colours! Marble is a classic for benchtops, but depending on how you did the wood, it wouldn't look fake at all! If I do go for the atlantic for chairs I will bring in plum touches and vice versa. Will now need to go and find some plum that closely aligns with your suggestions. Thanks for saying we can keep table! It is a good solid NZ made oak one ... chairs were all the rage back about 18 years ago! Now need to go! The look you are going for is a great look- elegant and timeless. A great asset for a kitchen that will need to last a long time. I have a couple of favourite products for laminate.
- Kyoto nite from the Admira range. It is brown toned fine woodgrain with a darker fine streak through the grain. It's very authentic looking and a quality product and very durable. Expect to pay a bit more for this laminate. I have used it on furniture for young family and still looks good years later!
- If you are after something a more budget laminate I would go for Nikpol Hacienda black. It is more charcoal with a lighter brown grey tone grain. I have used it in the project below with the grain running horizontal.Best wishes with your new home

7 years agothat's a great looking kitchen, black is right on trend and it looks like you prefer a modern style for your kitchen, Shaker Style doors are extremely popular and suit most styles. Also have a look at Kaboodle kitchens online for colour ideas.Cheers

I liked the black but I'm sure they will have other colours.

5 years agoHi, yes we ended up using Bottega Oak on all our cabinetry, including vanities, in built tv units. In the kitchen we used it on bottom section and I love how it looks. Here're some photos I took.
