VOTE: Would you ever let your partner design your home?

Love, relationships, design - what do they all have in common? Well, apart from the tears and the feel-good factor, they all rely on an element of trust. But how far are we able to let that trust extend to? As interiors geeks, design is something close to our hearts and we're all, well, particular about how we like our spaces shaped and structured. With all that in mind answer me this - would you let your partner completely design your home, or is that a step too far?

this is the partner that you plan to live with in your new home?? surely he/she should have some input into your combined accommodation and you hope to live happily together enjoying a combination (or clash) of both of your favourite styles

I'd be happy to let hubby design the exterior of our home (excluding garden), but not the interior, because it literally would look like the inside of a NASA workshop.

Now it's beginning to work! Luv the rug! A few more red showstoppers, and I luv the post about matting your family pic, and larger frame for it. Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Would you cosider a quite contemporary fixture for the light in the center ceiling? Maybe a bit of red could go there!

The ghost chairs are AMAZING! Very strong and stable. It brings a a lot of space for a small room and the loui style are very classy. Ok I will buy the table, it's goof price and I totally love it. I am living in a construction camp at the moment! Everything is a mess but I hope everything will look beautiful when the renovation finishes. I have just moved in with my partner, the typical manly man and I am the typical burly so it's hard to compromise in colours and styles! Plus there aren't many cost effective options in NZ so decorating is basically a mission!

We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. I need to work out what I will do now where the fridge was and there is the angle change (does that make sense?).

Thanks Susan. I would love to get feedback here from the Houzz community on butterfly roof construction. I know that flashing the valley will be critical to say the least. Whoever does the roof has to have 1. Skill 3. Architectural specs to follow 2. Guaranteed work. How do they hold up in a climate such as yours which is sub-tropical? It's a big project so you will need to be confident in the outcome. I think you have been watching too many reality TV shows that paint women as territorial princesses. A relationship is a partnership too, it is not just about love and trust, it is also about respect and consideration and having empathy for the other person's feelings and needs, two people living and working together for the good of each other. Each partner will have strengths and weaknesses and complimenting each other in this regard makes for a good relationship provided respect, empathy and consideration is shown, so no one partner should dominate in any aspect to this degree or even think about it. Even the most design challenged person should have some say in the environment they live in.

Yeah, he comes up with some pretty practical ideas, but I would have to have veto power.

Ah, in a word; No. I have seen his ideas and he really just tacks bits on as he feels are needed and that is not how I plan. Some men seem to just enjoy utilitarian areas and some men are more into how things will run in the future. Some women are better than others in planning and some throw their hands up and say they don't have a clue. I guess it really depends on the person's partner's personality, but just let it be said, I would never let my man make a home for me unless I enjoyed living in an abandoned maze with junk everywhere!

my husband drew up the plan for our new home. We have designed the fit out together but he did a great job. I'm tempted to put him in charge of the whole outside landscape.
