For chair scoot and sit space, I'd follow the guidelines for a rug - 4' all around. Then you want to be able to navigate around the table while people are seated, so add another 18" all around. Are you locating the table at the end of the galley? Maybe you could use a banquette on one side or in the corner
Thank you for your comments, much appreciated. The dining table is an antique and needs to go alongside the galley kitchen, i.e. one half of the room is the galley kitchen the other half the dining area. I was concerned that my kitchen designer hadn't allowed enough space for the dining table, and that the oversized benches in the galley kitchen are too large.
Are we talking round or rectangular? Rounded is easier. More space the better, but on one side of my formal dining table there is only 27 inches from table to buffet (way less than recommended I know!) but it has worked fine for us. That is where the skinny guests sit.
