Vinyl in bedrooms?

Hi all, we are really struggling with what to do- background we have really old cream carpets and a dog that wees in a particular spot in our bedroom. Carpets desperately need changing but we can't decide on new carpets or vinyl. We have 3 kids and 2 dogs and live in a stilt home with basic vinyl downstairs. My thoughts are we could get really good, wood looking vinyl which due to the nature of the house could look like real wood. On the other hand I'm just not so sure vinyl in the bedrooms looks that great...can I have some honest opinions and if you have bedrooms with vinyl could you post some pics? thank you!

Nelson Interior Stylists - we have looked at the laminae but from the research i have done the new style of vinyl- particularly karndean gives such a wood look result, it has groves etc to make it look like real wood and the feel underneath is like real wood, its pretty sound proof too. Another plus for us is it is 100% waterproof so we dont have to be so careful with spilt water, cleaning etc.

siriuskey and JE C thanks so much for your input, i am leaning towards vinyl i just dont want it to look like a cheap renovation. Many years ago in the UK lots of people used stick down vinyl in rental properties and it just made it look cheap however, as mentioned above the Karndean range and the like actually do look like real wood. Hmmm! Such a dilemma! We are doing the stairs this weekend so that will be a starting point. Another thing is hubby isn't keen on the dark wood look for floors but i love it! With clean white trims and walls i think it'll just look fabulous!

I should probably add we are ripping up the carpet in the stairs and putting dark wood on the treads and white paint on balistrades etc as per pics in my ideas books.

Hi there,

have you considered wood on the floor as it will look nice than vinyl as vinyl really does look cheap.

even at Bunnings you can get a click board wood that is $20 a square metre.

Thanks for the replies! My wife suggested we talk to a local real estate agent, so i think that is a good idea... just that Im not sure how helpful they are likely to be if we arent selling yet :) As for saving for our dream house, I dont disagree, however if doing this up nicely over the next ~5 years or so while we live here nets us some extra in the eventual sale, then that of course will help us as well. Interesting thing happened today actually. I got a knock on the door and one of the older neighbours asked if he could take some lemons from the tree. I of course said yes. Anyway he was telling me he had lived in the street for 40 years. I asked him if the house had always looked like this, and he said no that ~30 years ago the old old owner did a massive renovation and pulled off the timber and put up the bricks and gutted the inside of the house. HI Madison There are pros and cons for every situation, but you need to work out what is best for your lifestyle. Personally, I agree with the carpet in the living room, and hard flooring in the kitchen/dining areas. All you need to do is work out your demarcation points (where carpet will meet hard flooring). A great retailer should be able to visit you at home, discuss options, give you pricing and away you go! (Us if you are in Auckland :) ) With littlies, I'd suggest a vinyl plank.....other posts will tell you I'm a big fan of it, but with kids, toys, mess, liquids etc, vinyl planks will give you the best wear over time. They are very hard wearing (Karndean have lifetime residential warranty), easy to keep clean, and waterproof - can be installed in all wet areas. Timber flooring, depending on which you choose (real wood, engineered wood, laminate), may not be the best "fit for purpose" products in your situation. Whilst I'm not trying to champion one product over the other, having had carpet with little kids, and putting drop sheets over carpet, under highchairs, why wouldn't someone not put in vinyl planks?

Hi kerrie, with your doggie problem, sounds like it would be a good idea to make the stairs and the bedroom floor the same,timber very well sealed. You could then have an edged carpet square for the bed that doesn't cover anywhere your doggie pees. It might be a good idea to keep a couple of small squares of the old carpet if your doggie decides not liking the new surface for his marking spot, you can change them over and hose them down to keep a fresh smelling room cheers

I agree that it would ideally be good to have stairs and bedrooms consistent, but I also think vinyl doesn't necessarily look cheap - some brands look amazing and they are so practical.

If you are going for vinyl just make sure you get samples to take home to see what you think.

Personally I have to agree with Nelson interiors re the vinyl and the one you mentioned is not inexpensive to use, I have a friend who used it and was disappointed that she hadn't gone with the real thing

You must use what you like as it's your house and choice but try to maintain consistency in the flooring for the best outcome. cheers

Hi Kerrie. I urge you to look carefully at the floorings and source the ones with low VOC. with the amount of time one spends sleeping it's crucial to ensure the rooms are as healthy as can possibly be. Cheers.
