What an outlook, can you give measurements including doors and windows along with the combustion stove, which could be moved into a living space for heating? photos of the retro sink and size as well. Will you be able to assemble and install the cabinets?, Cheaper to use larger cabinets than smaller ie; 1 x 800 instead of 2 x 400. Whats the dogs name? cheers

what are the dimension of the work bench? attempting to insert plumbing and a sink in the bench will spoil it's industrial appeal, it would be much better as a chopping board style island with open storage underneath... the 3D views look like a kitchen much more suitable for the suburbs, not in your country home...where do all the doors lead to are there two or three? please explain the alcove with the fridge and what's in the empty space next to the alcove...is it another door? do you intend to have a dining area in the room? will you keep the gas space heater? are the existing gas cooker, wood heater and sink good enough to reuse in the new kitchen? plain base cabinets with steel D handles, open steel wall shelves (ie designed for use in the garage) and the standard dark grey laminate counters would be a great combo with the old bench but we need to understand the size and shape of the existing kitchen and adjoining rooms much better

Assume everything has been gutted, although not sure about the wood heater at this stage. Other items are borderline for reuse. I like your suggestion about dark grey laminate. The door near the sink is the front entryway, door near heater leads to a sunken lounge and third door is a hallway.

The alcove is to be added as a repurposing of an existing cupboard. The space nearby is part of a bedroom.

your bench is so much better than the one in the photo and it's a different shape and size, would have to be smaller to fit under the window with a sink and do you want a dishwasher..??? my suggestion uses the bench as a central island without any structural changes and would have pride of place in the room

That's a great suggestion, thank you. The width of the bench may be a problem though- it's 760mm wide, by 1950mm long. I do indeed have a dishwasher, so you're on the money there.

Hi there, I love where you got your ideas from, so I have drawn up a plan that you could either use the Bench as the island or for the sink, this plan has your bench under the window with the sink, 600 x 1800 island with cook top and DW and draws, open timber shelving along two walls similar to your inspiration photos. (You could use the Vice to hold the lamb while you carved haha

If you were to use the Bench as the Island which would work size wise, you would then have the sink and DW built into cabinets under the window.

A built in banquette/cafe style eating/dining space

You could use Bunnings workshop style wire shelving instead of some of the timber, looks good and could be cheaper depending on how handy you are. cheers

There's nothing to stop you from using the whole bench without cutting it down for using it as the sink cabinet, under neath the sink could be a great place for a rubbish bin and other storage. The whole bench kept if used for an island. I forgot to mention that the under bench oven is below the cooktop, you could have a wall oven/fridge between the open shelving and fire

Thanks guys. The next port of call will definitely be an Ideabook. There is a great range of options here. I like the idea of combining old with new. Any pointers on lighting and floors to match suggested layouts gratefully received.

You can buy the caboodle bamboo kitchen bench top from Bunnings wood section and cut it to any size you want. If you just wax it, it is quite rustic and would save you the cost of getting a benchtop made. It comes in two thicknesses and is 600mm deep. The piece that I bought was 2.4m long. Have a look at it, at least. Then if you have some other rustic pieces or even units with steel tops, it can tie the rest together. My vote is to keep the stove and get some rustic or industrial cup'd handles. A real farmhouse kitchen is a mix and match thing. My vote is for trying to keep the bench you bought as an island if you can. I would go for open shelves along the wall where the stove and fridge are and put the microwave on one of them. Maybe you could find some different tiles for behind the sink. I would rip those shiny ones off the wall and choose something that will fit in with your mix'n match rustic style, or just something quirky - even old wood. It all depends on how much money you want to spend and kitchens add up very quickly. If it functional and pleases your eye, then you are a winner. If the carcasses are still usable, it is much cheaper to just get new doors for them, when you can afford it. I wouldn't bother with window covering in the kitchen. I would just leave it for the light. Maybe a glass shelf across it with some herbs on it. It already sounds good to me.

I wanna see how my kitchen will look like too :D Though, we still have some things to fix up... My wife has a lot of ideas, but she doesn't know how to put them together. As for me, the kitchen should be plain and simple where every little thing is on its place. After all, my wife is the one who is going to spend more time there, so she has to be satisfied with the result !
