Comments (40)Tess, I hope I'm not too late with the following advice. Don't ever paint brick. Your house is a simple design, exterior wise. Paint wont fix it. What's missing is a designed garden. Even the simplest brick house can look like an inviting, lived in home when it has a structured garden surrounding it. For less than the price of paint, invest in a landscaper to design a garden that will soften and greatly enhance your homes street appeal ...and add many $ in value. Painted brick detracts from value and has to be repainted periodically, defeating the purpose of brick, which is, no maintenance. Besides, your house, painted white or cream as has been suggested here, would stand out in the street like a proverbial sore thumb. To make your house seem seamless and less disjointed I would paint the brick work exactly the same as the exterior woodwork. I have a painted brick house and it looks great. I would keep it the same colour as the wood as it will make the house look bigger. Lighter or darker on the verandah will simply break the house up.The first image above the house looks seamless, whereas in the photo below, using a lighter colour has broken up the house and it doesn't appear as big so I would opt for the same colour as I've suggested :)
It is very much a personal decision but I just wanted to bring this to your attention as there are some suggesting a lighter shade or white washing.
If you decide to paint, ask for the same colour but for a paint for masonry. My house has been painted for 8 years and it looks as good as the day it was done but I live in New Zealand and it was a Resene product specifically for masonry/concrete. Also I advise to go for a low sheen, you want more of a matt look on brickwork. Speak to the paint pro's as to the type of paint that will be best to use. It should not weather any differently than the woodwork, actually it should last longer on brickwork. You will need to do two undercoats and two top coats.
