Driveway re designed

We need to replace the driveway and repair the retaining wall, we would like to take the chance to make the steps to our front patio and front door not so deep. We wonder about narrowing the garden behind the retaining wall, and making sweeping steps. It is North facing and sunny.

The area to the Left has just been finished. The mailbox area is being taken out with us putting the Mailbox on the other side. We are open to any advice and design suggestions, including plantings.

Hi Carole,

There is quite a few options as you are going to be re doing the driveway and repairing the retaining, what is on the other side of the fence?

One option would be to put in a set of steps with a dog leg in them allowing the steps to be bigger and feel more grand, this would also enable you to put some planting on both sides of the steps to soften the space down.

Ultimately a lot of this is going to be dictated by what is happening on the other side of that fence and the planting will need to tie in with the planting on the left hand side. I would recommend getting a local Landscape Designer to come and look at the space and address it as a whole to ensure a great and cohesive landscape is achieved.

Sweeping steps could work, because this will make the sweep of the driveway work as part of the visual welcome to your home. It will also give them a bit more presence. The current steps look quite small and abrupt, so do not invite you in.

The fence creates quite a barrier there. It shuts off the access to your home visually, and is very harsh. If you really need a fence there, can you make it at least partly permeable to at least have some sense of there being somewhere to go? A front entrance needs to lead you in and it presently leads to the drive then stops very suddenly.

A horizontally slatted fence could work with the current balcony balustrade and help to update it while keeping its character.

If the fence could be behind the steps and the front door, as well as being semi permeable, it would be even more welcoming.

Some plantings will also help to soften all the hard surfacing.

I like your plan but I don't think a pattern on the bed wall is a good idea. The carpet already has a lot of pattern so I'd keep that wall a solid, dark color, from the rug. Add some sparkle like mercury lamps for the bedside tables for interest.

Your layout for you kitchen looks really good and would fit well with the mixture of black and white cabinetry. With the lament bench top, we would suggest melamine (entry level cabinetry) or acrylic bench top, which can come in high gloss feature or matt. The matt surface would go lovely with your choice of bench top, and acrylic is also a affordable cabinetry material. Below are some examples of how Reno4u has incorporated both black and white cabinetry together, without making it to dominantly dark. We feel as if these examples would be perfect for your layout, and depending on if you want more black cabinetry or white you can go either way. This design above is an example with more black than white, can be made matt or gloss with different handles/splash back and wallpaper. With a u shaped kitchen similar to yours, however from the pictures you provided your style may include different design below the island bench. Another kitchen designed by us which shows more white than black, with a bar built in which may suit your design better. Thanks for your comments everyone. We've taken your advice (Luke and NH) and changed the island to a rectangle (1200 x 3000). We lose one breakfast bar seat but gain storage and dining room space plus it shortens the distances from the island to the cooktops. It also removes the need for a corner carousel. We're much happier with this result. Dairy_maid, we've done what you suggested and walked through some common tasks. Overall it works reasonably well although we may keep some coffee spoons and butter knives in the scullery drawers for morning toast and coffee. We've also invested in a "silent" rangehood which has the motor on the outside of the house behind the fridge and we've upgraded the scullery sink to one that is 600 x 400 (internal size). Fabrication starts tomorrow. Woohoo. Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. The design has been significantly improved with your input.

Thank you for your comments, it is along the lines of our thinking. Fence to the right is a boundary fence, with our neighbours 2 meters away. We will get someone in to look at the space, but wanting to get ideas and our heads in the right space so we can be clear about the challenges.... What you have both said is great Thank you.
