Floating vanity with little/no wall space for pipes?
Hi all,
We are doing a power room renovation and really like the look of a floating vanity as in this photo below (the photo is from a showroom). However there is a sliding door behind where the vanity will go so there is very limited wall space for the pipes.
Our builder says we could choose a floor mounted vanity to hide the pipes, or they could box in the pipes but we would lose the floating look. It will be quite a small room and I like the feeling of space the floating vanity gives.
I was wondering if anyone had any insights into this situation, either pictures of vanities with boxed in service pipes (I've googled but not sure what search terms to use) or suggestions for other work-arounds (with photos if possible!). Anything that might be helpful really! There will also be a shower in the room so we are planning on tiling the walls if that is relevant.

Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Comments (6)I would suggest your plumber links the hot and cold fill pipes to the supply UNDER the sink - this gets rid of unsightly pipes and while he's there get him to move the taps to the L side of sink. I would then create a broad drop down counter top to create a place to sort your laundry ready for hanging out to dry or to fold ready for ironing This drop down counter top to be hinged to R side of washing machine and ensuring the taps are not impeded. If you can't do the drop down version then create a free standing top made out of a piece of MDF/laminated board to put over the sink and washing machine for clothes sorting & folding. This free standing top can 'live' at the side of the washing machine when not needed. I would then put shelves above the folded back counter top to store washing powder and sundries. I would store the washing powder etc in colourful or white boxes to keep the place looking tidy and uniform. Handles on the boxes for ease of access. Comments (14)Hi Nic, I've been stuck with shower-over-baths in a few rentals and they can be slippery death traps! They also get grotty in summer with bare feet, post beach showers etc which limits usage as a bath anyway. If your kids are old enough I'd go for just a nice big shower area or a separate shower with a compact freestanding bath if you can fit one. If your kids are little or the above won't work for you here's some tips to make a shower over bath safer and easy to use: - Pick a bath with an absolutely flat bottom and anti slip texture at the shower end (those suction anti-slip mats are worse than useless). - Position the shower screen so that you can step straight onto the anti slip part. - Make sure the bath edge is low enough for the kids to enter end exit easily. - A hand held shower head that can move up and down would be a nice addition. Comments (9)I agree with Diane's ideas! Grey is a nice color. The only thought I had on having a corner sink cabinet, you may not be happy with it in the end. You have a little corner, and the sink may be too small for you in the end along with not having any storage space. If you can't find any curtains that you love, try a cheap roller blind for now. It will give you a visual look and an idea if you want to stay with a curtain or going a bit modern with a patterned blind or even a roman type shade. It could turn the cozy look into a clean modern look. Framed mirrors are expensive. Call a glass company in your area and have them give you a price on mirrors. It might be quite nice to take the mirror down, and replace the wall there with a complete wall mirror to fit, stopping the mirror at the vanity, and continuing the mirror across the vanity between the sink and window. It will make your bathroom feel much bigger, even though you wont be able to see in the mirror over the sink. Close up the vanity doors with new door. Use props first (white poster to cover up the doors) etc. before you buy anything! Stick on tiles are a great idea! They clean nicely and look great. Although I wouldn't go with the wood look. Your bathtub tiles are old fashioned, go with a stick on floor tile that is easy to look at, try to get samples first. Remember Gray is a sleek clean modern color. It is not a cozy country color. If you don't like the grey in the end, maybe a real pale blue or butter yellow (that would be more of the cozy cottage look)....See More

oklouise, would you have the false wall going all the way along the bathroom or just jutting out behind the vanity? We have a few cm to work with as the vanity we are looking at is a little narrower than it could be.
jacqueline thank you so much for your photo! Something that goes down a bit lower might help disguise the pipes, ours will be a much smaller room than yours.
siriskey, I have attached the plan for this room to see if it is helpful. I am leaning towards choosing a different vanity but as you have said this one is lovely! But it won't be lovely if it doesn't work...!

5 years agoI have done this on some of my bathroom projects. Where there was no option for the waste etc to go through the wall, I chose a floating vanity (a bit deeper than the one in your picture) and used the wall tile to tile an inset kicker under the cabinet. Usually you cant notice it. Sorry I dont have a photo to show you.
Another idea you could consider is to make a feature of the waste with a bottle trap and open shelving like example below.

Go side to the nearest wall, or in my case, a cabinet.

Thank you so much to everyone who offered their suggestions. After talking it all over we decided to choose another vanity - to save the space of a floating wall and $$.
We picked this wall-hung from Timberline which is a bit more substantial and will be able to have the services hidden a lot better.
I'm very grateful for all of your advice: I feel like we considered all our options and I'm satisfied with the decision, rather than wondering 'what if?'Rose213 Gl

3 years agoI was happy with the way it came out. You can’t really see where the pipes are most of the time, but it does make it tricky to store scales or a stool under there
