what to do with my cornices? can I be modern?

We are about to do a large scale renovation. Our 1960s house is going to get an extension out the front and the back, new windows, plastering, timber floors etc. builder said it will be like a new house when done.

We are not sure what to do with cornices. I love square set but my husband says this will be expensive in the rooms like in the photo because the wall would have to be built up. He said cornices would be cheaper.

Even though I like ornate cornices, I am worried they will detract from the modern look I want. He prefers to keep what we have as much as possible to keep costs down.

Is it possible to achieve a modern look with ornate cornices in some rooms?

We have the following options:
1. Keep ornate in old part of house and put square set in extension at the back of house with lounge kitchen and dining area
2. Put ornate throughout
3. Put less ornate cornices throughout.

I am keen to not make our house look like a Reno job. Costing $850000 I want it to look good!
