Too tidy with no design in our living room
Comments (43)Now it's beginning to work! Luv the rug! A few more red showstoppers, and I luv the post about matting your family pic, and larger frame for it. Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Would you cosider a quite contemporary fixture for the light in the center ceiling? Maybe a bit of red could go there!...See MoreHow to make best use of laundry space?
Comments (6)I would suggest your plumber links the hot and cold fill pipes to the supply UNDER the sink - this gets rid of unsightly pipes and while he's there get him to move the taps to the L side of sink. I would then create a broad drop down counter top to create a place to sort your laundry ready for hanging out to dry or to fold ready for ironing This drop down counter top to be hinged to R side of washing machine and ensuring the taps are not impeded. If you can't do the drop down version then create a free standing top made out of a piece of MDF/laminated board to put over the sink and washing machine for clothes sorting & folding. This free standing top can 'live' at the side of the washing machine when not needed. I would then put shelves above the folded back counter top to store washing powder and sundries. I would store the washing powder etc in colourful or white boxes to keep the place looking tidy and uniform. Handles on the boxes for ease of access. Oh I do love organising - can I pop round and do this for you? Hope all goes well with the changes....See MoreNeed help with updating living area
Comments (2)Why don't you live in the house for a while and get a feel for things. The curtains are bright but if they are still good quality / newish it would be a very expensive exercise to replace them (I have just spent a few thousand just on three rooms), you can always add a few red cushions or a red toned throw over your existing couch or a rug with a red tones in to it, to tone the red down, if required. Repainting the walls is cheaper than replacing curtains and a piece of art with red tones may also help. As far as furniture is concerned it would depend on what you like style wise. Why not send us a photo after you have moved in. You may find some of your concerns disappear once you are in and settled....See MoreWest and east facing living area
Comments (2)Hi Reece, Are you in Taranaki on the west side of the mountain? There are fairly simple equations to do for sun angles at your lattitude to control sun penetrating the house in summer whilst allowing the sun in during the winter, when you will appreciate it. This works easily on the north elevation but you should be able to work it out for the east and west too. Google it to find your specific location and decide how far out you want the overhang to go. Of course, on the east and west, the sun will always get in unless you have full shading or have window treatments closed. Generally in NZ, morning sun will be more pleasant than evening sun if you don't really want it. It is to do with the earth heating up as opposed to cooling down. Also, I find people spend more time sitting outside under a shade structure in the afternoon, so I would be inclined to provide more shade on the west. However, you should still have a protective roof at the entry. If you post a floor plan with North indicated on it and what windows you are proposing, i.e, hoe high the sills and heads of the windows are, we should be able to assist further. Also, are you needing to screen neighbours etc? C....See MoreDavid Soliman
