What is the white on the limestone pavers?
We have just had these Hossegor limestone pavers laid around our pool. They have been pressure washed but not yet sealed.
What are these white streaks on so many of our pavers? It doesn't look like efforesence that I have seen on the web. You can't wash it or scrub it off. The streaks were there before the pressure wash.
Also, what are the likely causes of these scratch marks? From the manufacturing stage or handling at home?
We are considering having the pavers honed that apparently will take a layer off only a few microns deep. The honing will make the pavers slightly smoother (and I guess more slippery) around the pool. NOT what we wanted at all.
Any ideas on what these marks and scratches are and how to fix it?

Comments (11)The floor and cabinets almost look like the same color. I would lighten the cabinet color - making sure it doesn't clash with the floor color. I would also modernize the open cabinet above the microwave by removing the moulding, or adding a door. I'd find an inexpensive countertop that pops against the wood (or painted) wood cabinets. Change out the cabinet glass to clear, and do a new backsplash that brings it all together. Comments (77)I won't bother with lattice, barrels are partially obscured from the street by fencing and if I put it up I would have to work around the lattice in order to turn the valves for water. If I can just make better use of collected water I'll be happy. We are at the end of our growing season so I should be cleaning up the garden and putting it to bed for the winter, just can't seem to get motivated. We had our first frost last week. Usually, our average early frost date is 1 November. I got almost no produce from garden this year, but there is always next year. Chookchook2 I've seen some of those decorative metal panels and they are gorgeous, sure hope your budget will allow you to get some before too long. Most of our state has been on fire for a good part of the summer. The closest is across the river from us and they have been battling it for almost a month. Some friends have had to evacuate repeatedly. We've only been concerned once, a small grass fire on our side of the river on a day we had wind gusts up to 65mph. Fortunately, it was put out quickly. Australia and New Zealand have both sent firefighters to help with the blazes. I can't begin to tell you how appreciative we are. The closest fire was fought for almost a week by local volunteers only as there were no other resources available. They were all on other fires. The Army National Guard (reserve troops) were called out to help with support duties and for the first time ever the federal Department of Natural Resources (DNR) asked for civilian volunteers to help with non firefighting tasks, cutting fire breaks, moving supplies etc....See Morehow to improve a basic house?
Comments (14)I haqve just seen this , and it is well over a year old , so presumably you are well into renovations , or maybe finished . Here's my take though -- probably too late though ! Your picture looks like those 70's photo's that faded and yellowed ( sorry to be rude ) . So freshen and modernise . Paint the walls white -- not beige or yellow . It will look so much 'cleaner' . redo the dark uprights and base boards -- I can't tell if they are dark green , or black , but I'd do black stain over it . The fence I would also do in black . The yard , step one , would be hide and soften it . The Cape Cod chair paint in white , with the pailings in bright primary colours -- each one different . Add 2 or 3 planters -- different shapes and sizes and heights , but all stained a nice Kwila brown or charcoal or similar . Big leafy plants , cactuses , yukkas , maybe white and light brown pebbles , marigolds , colour , texture , different height plants . Personally , I would go further -- paint the roof , rip up most of the pavers , possibly even change the windows to bronze or charcoal frames . So, the paver retailer said that the white streaks are caused by grout being wiped across the pavers and not cleaned properly. He said that some pavers may be more porous than others and hence take in the grout. He said phosphoric acid clean will get rid of it. See resultant image before and after.......NOT good at all. I'm going from bad to more bad.
The tiler said the white streaks and scratches are definitely caused during the manufacturing process, most likely during the honing process.
What am I to make of this?

4 years agoI thought I would update with the outcome of my dilemma. I decided to do a diamond abrasion red brush hone (done professionally). This took off about 1mm off the top of the paver, and it removed the white streaks! Yeah!!!.
40SK sealer has been applied as they are around a saltwater pool, and 2 coats of StainProof sealer.
The pavers are a bit shinier and smoother than the adjacent non-honed pavers that are under cover. I think this will even out in time with wear and environment impact.

2 years agoHi M N. It's a tough choice isn't it. I'm happy with the Hossegur. Not slippery when wet. I've attached a similar photo that I just took.
There were some darker tiles in the batch. I did notice it when they were first laid. To be honest, until you mentioned it, I had absolutely forgotten about it. The differences don't bother us in the slightest. The photos do exaggerate the tile differences more than I see in real life.
