Paint wood panelling in traditional style home or not?

Hi. I have just bought a new late 20s Queenslander. It has wood panelling in the entry and living area to about 3/4 wall height, and then VJ boards to the ceiling. I love the traditional features of the house in general but I'm not sure I want to live with the dark timber panelling. Normally I think it makes a room look way too dark, though luckily these rooms have good light. Looking for advice on whether to paint them for a more contemporary look, and if so what colour? I have a cream leather sofa and a blue grey traditional rug I would like to use in the living space. Will post some photos soon.
