Help to make front porch more welcoming
Comments (47)Thank you so much for your comment after all this time. The colour you have suggested brightens the front door area beautifully and if the two red pots were painted in a tone to match, we think it would look great. Not sure if you can get Crestview doors in New Zealand but there must be something similar. We like the idea of going away from another cedar door - mainly because it would stand out too much while it was weathering. I don't know whether we would have been that brave but the tangerine works so well with the jade green of the joinery. I have re-laid all the stones and put a new wider front step in. The timber colour will soften down in time. I put a big pot in the garden to draw visitors to the front door and have added some colourful bromeliads to the garden alongside the house to make the area a bit more cheerful. We can't make a decision about what to do with a larger 'overhang' to protect the front porch yet - it is a project in progress. Thanks again for your post....See MoreHouse extension help
Comments (13)Thanks Susan. I would love to get feedback here from the Houzz community on butterfly roof construction. I know that flashing the valley will be critical to say the least. Whoever does the roof has to have 1. Skill 3. Architectural specs to follow 2. Guaranteed work. How do they hold up in a climate such as yours which is sub-tropical? It's a big project so you will need to be confident in the outcome. I would research the heck out of construction techniques so as to be as informed as possible so that you are able to have a better dialog with the roofer when the time comes http://www.builderbill-diy-help.com/box-gutter.html...See MoreDoes combining a bathroom & laundry work?
Comments (8)It all depends on what you want to do in your laundry and what in your bathroom I guess. I appreciate the fact that there might not be enough space to do this but I store outdoor shoes in the laundry and the dog's leash and cleaning stuff. I need room to sort the dirty laundry into piles before washing it. I keep the ironing board in there and I need a tub to wash things in and to do flowers in and to put the odd cloth that wiped up the cat sick before it gets rinsed and washed.. heaps of things other than just washing. Couldn't manage with a cupboard laundry ( piles of washing on the hall floor when using it) and think these kinds of laundry functions might not make a gorgeous lavendery bath or shower feel that luxurious. So I am for as big a laundry with tubs, cupboard and bench nearest the outside back entrance and yes washing line as poss. And a lovely fresh warm bathroom near the bedroom separate from the dirty clothes and boots and all that other stuff....See MoreHelp with small kitchen in new house (pics)
Comments (2)Hi Gerné - thought I could give you some ideas on how to maximise this kitchen on a low budget. You've added some great photos here to demonstrate the space! From what I can see you have a minimalistic style and lean more towards stainless and monochromatic materials, (love your tap by the way) - There are a number of ways you could add a little more storage and character without spending much.. In the photo there are numbers for reference; 1. I would investigate floating shelves - there are a number of different colours, widths, and lengths to suit the space accordingly. installing these on each side of your splash back would add a bit more storage for your favourite pieces i.e.; vases, baskets, soft accents.. this is more about proving a space to add individuality rather than practical storage. - bare in mind that these need to be installed on load bearing walls - from personal experience they can slant and sag if not completed correctly. 2. This space looks narrow from the photo - you can find a great range of shelving units from Freedom Furniture.. I would recommend a corner unit or a thin & long shelf, I would go with black to retain the scheme here. Kmart has also got some great pieces that I think would fit well into your scheme - check out their Urban Range! 3. Luckily there is storage space up here - I would utilise it for things that aren't used as often that you wouldn't mind getting on a step ladder to retrieve. I have added some photos of above cabinet storage for some inspiration. 4. I would also recommend utilising this space; from the photo this looks nice and wide and would accomodate a free standing shelf well. If you have heard of IKEA I would check out Urban Sales - unfortunately there is no IKEA in NZ - however this is a trusted retailer that supplies products from the store to NZ. Hope this helps! - Also I would recommend investing in additional cabinet space against this wall (5) it would add a huge amount of storage for your family and their needs. I have tried to find the most inexpensive options for you as I am aware of cost. Happy to come at this from another angle if this isn't what you were looking for!...See MoreAnton Onipchenko
