Help for master bedroom design

Hi!

Have just bought our first home!! And so the renovations begin!

Currently the master bedroom is connected via sliding doors to a very 70's spa room! We really wouldn't use the pink spa often and dont want a lovely sundrenched room to be wasted.

We would love any advice on what to do with this space!

If you could close the windows in, it could be an ensuite. Or remove the spa and make a lovely sundrenched sitting room - my personal choice.

Hi Calypso. We would need a lot more information to be really useful, but to start with I suggest you look at as many rooms as you can to see what you like. I've put, for example, two very different ways of using it below. What's your style? Crisp, romantic, girly, quirky? Maybe start with whichever of these two rooms you like best and then think about what you would like to change in the room to bring it closer to being right for you. Then look for other styles of rooms, either on Houzz or on Google images or in magazines. Work out what makes you say, "Yes, please!" Then determine what furniture you have that needs to stay -- if the colour's not right, can you paint it? If you could give us a couple of pics of the room as it is now, with that information, and an idea of what kind of room you dream of, you could get more useful help. In my opinion, a reader needs good bedside lights and a well-lit reading chair, as well, of course, as bookshelves -- and there are all kinds of great ways to fit shelves into a room. Do you also need homework space in your bedroom? There are all sorts of super ways to accessorise your room to reflect your love of reading, too. But first things first ....

OK - I'm a beginner here on Houzz so my opinion isn't worth a lot but here it is: the room is a bit bland and lacking in character. I think you have to find some pieces you really love to bring it alive. All the suggestions are good for widening your horizons, but ultimately, you need to find things that matter to you, because it's your home and not a magazine photoshoot. That said, if it were me, I'd throw a couple of small, colorful rugs down, and put either one large painting or three smaller ones over the bed - not in a line but at different heights - to break up the binary look. I'd also put something on the wall above the heater. Then, play around with a few cushions and maybe a quilt that picks up some of the colours in your artwork.

A headboard really helps to define the space, but if you can't afford one, paint one on the wall in a cool shape (a triangle for instance). If you go ahead with the black chalk wall idea, use a bright colour for the headboard (like yellow). You can then use the same paint colour to paint some second hand picture frames and hang these on the chalk wall - writing your inspirational messages inside it.

The market is full of tropical/botanical art at the moment which lend themselves well to tropical or beachy looks. The look you are after calls for natural textures with a soft colour palette, think linen bedding and layer it up with throws and cushions for texture and pops of colour. In my opinion drapes are not a good option in your room as the ceiling slopes to just above your window at a certain point. This would dictate the height at which your drapes hang and, in this instance would be too low. To soften the windows, I would have a tall palm or Fiddle Leaf Fig tree in wicker basket. It also looks like you have the space for a chair.

live in the house for at least 12 months to get an idea of how all the spaces feel at different times of the day to have a better idea of which rooms to use in different ways...in the meantime you could move the spa downstairs to see if you find yourself using it at all and use the spa room as part of the master bedroom but it seems as though the house has had several renovations and there's is no clear use for some rooms ....do you and guests enter the house from the carport to the upstairs living areas or come in at the middle level...do you want to have the kitchen upstairs and/or have a better connection to the garden and internal access to the laundry? what's on your wish list?

I would turn the upper level into the parents zone changing bar to en-suite.
The spa room becomes a sunny breakfast room. Note that looks like an external area that they have enclosed. Diff ceiling and floor level to the attached bedroom. Remove the sliding doors if the room is to stay a bedroom and add a window on north wall, closing up the spa access; or turn it into a kids zone.
The large bedroom/study at the front make that the second living area.

But if you can move in first and experience what is there for 6 months.

Hi Clare,

What a lovely property you have secured for yourselves in a fabulous part of the world! I agree with above whoever said...live in the house for 12 months first before doing anything. then ensure you have plan for the whole house so as you do not spend money on one bit then wreck it later to change your minds to a much better plan.

Having said that: the first Issue I see is that from the kitchen you cannot see into the garden at the back. It is a very common fault with homes that present to the street ie living rooms entered first and bedrooms private at the rear. All good except we do not live in the front and when you have a beautiful sunny aspect in the rear THAT is where you want to be.

Not knowing how many people big or little, will be abiding here, it is hard to go further but it presents to me to make the bar the ensuite (as someone suggested above) pinch space for robe and enjoy a quiet living area on the top level.

The laundry could be brought up to where the kitchen is now. Make a room with by fold doors of the area at front where meals area is now for fourth bed/ study. put new kitchen in master bed area and open all the master bed, spa room, play/study plus the family room now to the garden and the sun.

Very easy from here to sit and rearrange it all! It really depends what you WANT, how many will be here, how often you have house guests etc etc...….
