Help me choose rugs, cushions and decorative pieces please!

I recently purchased the furniture in the photos, as well as the blue trellis rug. I am not sure if it matches or if it is too small. I am thinking of moving it under the dining table and buying a new rug for the living area but not sure what colours/pattern will match. I also need a new tv unit and some cushions to match whatever rug I intend on buying or maybe will just add to the cushions I have now but would like to add more colour as it seems too dull and boring for me at the moment. And should I get a white tv unit to match the nesting tables I have or get rid of those tables all together and get something in a different finish? Also any suggestions on what to put on the lamp tables? What kind of table lamp? The house is a rental so can't put anything on the walls.

Hi Nada,
I would move that lovely rug and put it under dining table and chairs, a leaning mirror on the wall behind the setting will reflect light and look gorgeous , a larger rug in similar colour tones for lounge room, as your furniture is formal go with luxurious fabrics in cushions and throw

Add beautiful lamps and buy canvas artwork that is light to hang using the command range of hooks used by rentals that remove completely when you leave, for a tv unit you could go with a similar colour to your tables, I would relocate the white tables leaving only your mirrored furniture

Now it's beginning to work! Luv the rug! A few more red showstoppers, and I luv the post about matting your family pic, and larger frame for it. Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Would you cosider a quite contemporary fixture for the light in the center ceiling? Maybe a bit of red could go there!

Hi anne, that's what I was originally thinking, my issue is what colour I use for the 'pop' :) I keep coming back to a teal/turquoise colour (it's one of my favourite colours!!), I love blues, purples, teal/turquoise - many on here have suggested yellow but I'm really not sure about it. Here in New Zealand we're in Autumn, nearing Winter so uncertain about the yellow. I found these cushions that I've fallen in love it, and wondering how I could make these work.. do I try teal and mustard together, as an interior designer suggested?

Sorry I am so late coming to your site - you are an inspiration to all, homeowners and advisers alike. For your planting advice, I suggest you call Merrifield Garden Center to see if they will come out your way. They currently have wonderful garden centers in Merrifield and Fairfax (both in Fairfax County) and a new one in Gainesville, but they may come further south to wherever you reside. (www.MerrifieldGardenCenter.com) Even if they don't send designers to your area, they are worth a trip to see their huge selection for a day of pleasure and inspiration, or to pick up some plants. OK - I'm a beginner here on Houzz so my opinion isn't worth a lot but here it is: the room is a bit bland and lacking in character. I think you have to find some pieces you really love to bring it alive. All the suggestions are good for widening your horizons, but ultimately, you need to find things that matter to you, because it's your home and not a magazine photoshoot. That said, if it were me, I'd throw a couple of small, colorful rugs down, and put either one large painting or three smaller ones over the bed - not in a line but at different heights - to break up the binary look. I'd also put something on the wall above the heater. Then, play around with a few cushions and maybe a quilt that picks up some of the colours in your artwork.

Some simple Grey/Blue toned sheer curtains on the windows will also soften the space. Also definitely a cream and grey/blue toned rug and similar scatter cushions for your lounge. Also some greenery in the form of faux or real plants in the corners of the room will fill the blank areas.

Thank you for the suggestions Julie! The mirror is gorgeous but I have a crawling baby at the moment so I will wait till we have our own place so I can secure it to the wall properly. The rug you pictured is beautiful but do you think it will work if the rug I have now is visible from the living area?

I see what you mean with the mirror, maybe a large light canvas artwork would be more suitable using the command hooks, I think if you pick up the blue in your rug you can choose another rug to go in couch area, you don’t need to match it pattern wise, looks beautiful to have different rugs in similar toning maybe think about the lamps also with your little one , don’t want to topple over onto them, maybe artwork, luxury cushions and throws and plants in a low heavy pot that won’t tip over could look beautiful until you feel safe to add them, love your furniture.
