How to make best use of laundry space?
Comments (6)I would suggest your plumber links the hot and cold fill pipes to the supply UNDER the sink - this gets rid of unsightly pipes and while he's there get him to move the taps to the L side of sink. I would then create a broad drop down counter top to create a place to sort your laundry ready for hanging out to dry or to fold ready for ironing This drop down counter top to be hinged to R side of washing machine and ensuring the taps are not impeded. If you can't do the drop down version then create a free standing top made out of a piece of MDF/laminated board to put over the sink and washing machine for clothes sorting & folding. This free standing top can 'live' at the side of the washing machine when not needed. I would then put shelves above the folded back counter top to store washing powder and sundries. I would store the washing powder etc in colourful or white boxes to keep the place looking tidy and uniform. Handles on the boxes for ease of access. Comments (17)Thank you everyone for your comments. We live outside Christchurch, and the house was badly damaged in the quakes here. The post-quake rebuild process could safely be described as slightly chaotic, and the house company I am using are located some distance away (like on the North Island), which is why discussion with the architect has been - em - less than optimal. The architect threw something at me to get me out of my comfort zone I think and this is what's freaking me out! I think the windows on the east side are to come (no reason for them not being there), and probably a skylight in the kitchen roof. The section of land is narrow and steep, (this is a historic port town and with access from the south (where the view is); there is no parking other than on the street (south). Patricia - the laundry doesn't sit right with me either! Looks a bit like it's been glued on the side of the hosue. And it is too small as it is to store coats, shoes etc. This is the access to the back garden - thus the door (also means muddy boots can be dumped when we come in!). Comments (17)Congratulations on your new home! Now, go cancel that order! Just kidding. Kind of... I really do think, after reading your posts, that you will be happier with the grey couches. Personally, black couches in general seem very bachelor pad (ish). That said, I know there are gorgeous black leather couches available. For a super modern industrial place, maybe. But beach, or that kind of vibe? I am not sure how you would pull that off over the years. Grey or tan (neither are my own favorite decorating colors, but still) would be oh so much better as a neutral for pulling in different color palettes with pillows and art, etc. if you decide to change up through the years... black might make you feel stuck. After reading through what I have written it seems a bit funny, as black is my personal neutral in clothing, jewelry and the like. But as I look around my home there is no black to be seen. Hmmm. In any event, follow your own intuition here, and don't feel like you have to fill the space before your home is even completed. Especially if you are having second thoughts. Lip pulls are quite small to grab. I agree with Paul's comments and that the finger marks, drips, food splashes, etc are going to happen anyway no matter what type of handle you have, especially on underbench doors/drawers. I had the same concern about the look of too many handles, and opted for a concealed fingerpull (or you could go for a concealed push mechanism) on overhead cupboards & handles on the under bench ones as in the photo below. I went for the long handles as they are easy to grab & open. It's nice to have some hardware as it's like an 'accessory' for your kitchen - gives a bit of 'bling' or contrast whether you go for traditional polished chrome, black, rose gold, etc. Best of luck for your renovation

4 years agoI often struggle with the lip pulls as there is not enough to grab, but prefer the clean lines of no handles. We went with aluminium channel behind the drawers in the kitchen originally, then in the bathroom. No problems, and I love the look. Only downside is that it takes some of the depth of the drawer, so not great with shallow drawers. And there is nowhere to hang teatowels :)

4 years agoHi Kate - have you considered trying a flush pull system like this? We've recently installed these in our kitchen and they provide ample to hold onto.
