Edwardian weatherboard colour.

I had always planned to paint this house all white. I like the black trims however, but the contrast with white weatherboards is too stark. Throw in the red bricks and it all gets a bit busy. If I painted the weatherboards a pearly grey, what should I do with the deck and the windows? White windows and a charcoal /timber deck and it all gets busy again.

Hi Lizzy,

Currently Grey's and white are "flavor of the month" and have been for a while. Colours can certainly date your home. Perhaps the services of a Colour Consultant who can take a photo of your home and show you a couple of schemes. Imaging the opposite. A dark grey, charcoal and white trims. Certainly makes a statement. I do like the attached link for inspiration.

I just think it needs more bright white trim around the windows and the fence painted also white. Going round to the back addition, I would paint the timber boards the color of the stucco, trim white and get some great deck furniture and lighting.

I need advice on colours for my entranceway - its 1770m wide and 5900m long. The walls have recently been re-gibbed with T&G panels attached approx a third of the way up the wall from the floor. I want to paint the area. I thought a darker shade on the t&g with a lighter shade above. Something to give it a bit of character. I want a warm neutral shade because its a cold south island nz climate. At this stage I am thinking a smoky grey tile on the floor with heating underneath. What colours do you recommend to go with the tiles? The door into the entrance and the door leading from entrance to kitchen are both cedar. So something to also match with them. Really appreciate some comments!! Also, the tiles would flow through the cedar door into the kitchen area which is an antique white shade. Open to suggestions of tile colour too.....nothing set in concrete as yet.

Are there any rules to follow regarding choosing exterior colours, ie, someone once told me that there should never be more than three colours, regarding the roof, walls and trims. Building a modern monoplane roof house on the coast. Like the idea of either Gull Grey or New Denim Blue for the metal roof. The interior pallette will be whites, inky navy, greys. Drawn towards grey for the weatherboard walls or white, prefer a black door. Although this is a modern house we are trying to inject a bit of modern farmhouse decor inside. My new home needs painting. I’d appreciate suggestions for a suitable colour scheme. My neighbours all have dark grey so keen to avoid that.
