Proposed plan: fridge won't fit there with the mantlepiece. Should I put a 150w cabinet against the wall, into the corner? Not sure about fridge door opening requirements

You can see the mantlepiece here, it's only 1050 away from the wall in the corner. Any way to put a fridge in here without removing the mantlepiece?? TIA

Souzette, I’d be inclined to put fridge on wall where peninsula is and then do a small mobile island. Extend cupboard under window to the end wall. You may need to shorten the crockery cupboard to improve flow. I know my layout ends with a corner cabinet but put a lazy Susan in it. But really think hard about why you want to keep the mantle, it will look odd with microwave below and probably annoying when using the microWave.

A French door fridge with drawers may work. As per attached. But I agree with Kate. Is this mantle able to be moved to somewhere else within the space, to be a feature.

Happy New Year to you, just quickly I don't think the fridge next to the fire place with or without the mantel will work, you have to be able to move the Fridge in and out for servicing and cleaning. Keep the mantel, can't remember the size of the kitchen but could suggest swapping the Fridge with the appliance cabinet, what is the depth from the wall to the fireplace. The sink butting up to the Fridge doesn't work very well it's very restricted for dirty and clean things.

You will have to ensure that the fridge will fit between the island and wall cabinets to be able to install and remove

thanks Siriuskey, will rough that scheme up in cad and see how it looks. The other consideration is the exhaust hood - this will be vented through the ceiling to the outside, so the cooktop needs to be in front of a wall.

HNY to all here - I'm in Goulburn and the house and air is smokey at the moment - hope you are all safe and happy in this current fire situation. In the middle of renovations, happy to concentrate on this and leave celebrations for when it's all done.

the fridge is subject to width depth and if the door opens on its self, cabinet. going by your drawing I know it will be close for the exhaust but with flexible exhaust tube it should work even venting out through the wall.

still think that the kitchen would be more comfortable and complement the old firepalce as an L shape with central table as per my suggestions last May

that was a good layout OKLouise, thank you. I want the island/peninsula though as it will be at a higher height to be able to use as a standing work station as well as kitchen bench...

I also remember suggesting a doorway between the island and the wall cabinets to access the new extension/Room which included a table and chairs, this will put the new fridge position within easy reach of that room and the garden

Souzette, my suggestion yesterday was as per okl but with island bench not table. By having it movable you can push it down to the microwave end opening up kitchen differently as needed. Even with your peninsula design, consider part of it being mobile. Wheels get hidden by kicker or could be exposed industrial style.

ok thanks all Im going to open my mind and revisit the brief -perhaps an L-shape may be the only option if I want to retain the mantlepiece. With my current plan, the fridge won't fit at the other end of the galley due to the need for rangehood to be wall-mounted. Perhaps the standing work station can be in the extension part...

what bad luck, I now think it would be better to remove the mantle, perhaps reduce the width.or just set it high enough to miss the fridge, If that is done how would the oven/cooker/range hood fit in that corner, just a thought as I think it better to keep the working kitchen together with stools up to the bench and the table in new room.

Pushing the boundaries Souzette, Your house is a lovely period style but that does'nt mean you can change it to make it more acceptable to the way we live in 2020

The kitchen space is too small to accommodate any real dining so I suggest opening up the walls either side of the fireplace so this will open up the kitchen and make it more today, the dining table can then be places in the living room. the space is still small but by doing this the gas fire place can be used to warm the kitchen and passage way by keeping bedroom etc doors closed. I hate sitting in a small warm room not wanting to leave the passage will add to the space. anyway just a thought

Hi Siriuskey, thank you, that is really a great option. Floorplan-wise it makes sense and makes use of the hallway space (hallways being somewhat redundant). Also makes use of the radiant power of solid-fuel heating to heat the bricks up. I would estimate around $7K to do the structural work, just cant do that right now, but I may keep that up my sleeve for down the track.

I think you 'get' the sense of scale, by not putting any cupboards on the wall it's a good way to open the space in this reno

The more I get into it I realise the difference between renovation and restoration. Probably been edging on the side of restoration (ie heritage focus) but am getting more pragmatic. Thanks again, cool layout

I think $7K is extreme given your talent we removed a couple of brick walls in our federation house a few years back him removing the bricks and me in a bikini on wheel barrow duty, this was done after checking any load bearing situation, the builder just tidy up the raw edges. I agree that passage is a waste of space and this does make great access to a dining space, you just have to look at your photos with the table to show how limiting it is

Thank you Kate, as Souzette said she seemed to hanging to the restoration which is great but small pokey rooms don't work for todays living except if you live in Japan.

I really hate living in a cold climate where you keep putting off going to the bathroom and leaving the warmth of the kitchen!!, that passage way could be better used and even if the door into the living/dining room had double doors like a lot of period houses have, it would make for better access and more chance of dining in the bigger front room plus it would allow more light into the passageway plus the extra light from the kitchen window. handing over to Souzette., very familiar with her floor plan and the hrs spent.
