Hello, I am looking for ideas for the landscaping and design of our boring rectangular backyard. We do not have any pets to worry about, or any close neighbours. We have two small children. We are in QLD.
You have a wonderful expanse of land for children and adults to play in. Please do not tell your kids that you think it is boring. First thing, ensure brick wall around yard is structurally sound and to code for correct height.( looks as though there is a drop on other side) install more of the planter boxes, along balustrade side of lawn. Full of vegetables and herbs. Remove ones from wall. Install flower bed along wall, in the ground. Get some "wet a soil" and fertiliser and bring that lawn back. It is the most cost effective way to cover such a big area. Paint and replace/repair anything on cubby house and climbing frame that is not safe. Paint/replace/repair balustrade for outside stairs. No matter what you decide, maintenance is the key. Small children can run around the backyard, play in the sand pit or cubby, if everything is safe. When they become teenagers, remove the sand pit and cubby. I can see the cubby corner area, being a great place for a shady cabana that they can hang out with their friends. This backyard is far from boring, it just needs to be cleaned up and the imagination can do the rest.
This is wonderful!!!!! Exactly the ideas I was after but didn’t have the imagination for!!! Thank you! And yes I have kept it a secret from the kids that I think it is boring out there ha ha. And you guessed it! That is a fruit tree down the side, mandarin. And yes you also picked it - that wall is very dangerous with a 3mtr drop behind it. Ok now to get started!
