Kitchens Renovating Design Dilemma

Looking for any ideas/suggestions for kitchen area layout

Hi all,

We are new owners of a house which we certain to renovate the kitchen in the next 3-6 months
The current kitchen is outdated and we are thinking we could like to open it up to an existing dining room next door

We were thinking of knocking through from the kitchen to this area and putting in a walk in pantry/ butlers pantry at the end and also giving the area more space in the kitchen

However I am worried it will make the kitchen less open plan or integrated into the meals and family area by

We would like to somehow include an island bench (if this size space would permit) and am not sure on what works best for layout of sink, wall ovens, induction cooktop and ventilation, fridge and preparation work spaces

We thought we would like to keep the plumbing for the sink at the kitchen window so it wouldn’t need to be moved

We are hoping that living in the space for a bit longer would give us a bit more idea on what might work but we would love any ideas, suggestions or experiences of similar situations, as we are definitely not experienced with things like this.

I have attached the current floor plan and one picture of something similar I found on Instagram with the two windows and a wall between kitchen and pantry which is what we were thinking

I don't know if you'll get a decent center island, but have you considered a galley kitchen? they're very functional, and more affordable than a center island that incorporate appliances/sink etc.

You could have the counter extended into the 'family room' just like this picture. Of course because of the kitchen entry way, the other side of the 'galley' will be split either side of this doorway (ie where the red oven is in this pic, there would be a doorway instead).

This with a 900 island, total width in this part of the kitchen is 3600, sink cabinet depth 600 this would give 1050 each side of island so quite like a galley kitchen

I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested.

I think the first layout is fine. You might want to consider moving the door for the storage room of the master bedroom so that it opens into the hall. That way the kids can use it for overflow storage. Also, that hallway is big enough that I think it could hold a large armour, providing more closet space. (There's no need to sleep in the same room as your clothes, so long as they're not too far off.) Also, don't forget that while the drawing shows kids in double beds, this need not be the case, so there will be more room for furniture (dressers or whatever) in their rooms. Finally, that step to bedroom 4 will not be odd at all. I've seen it in other homes. It looks clumsy in the drawing but it isn't. What you'll see when you come up the stairs is a bedroom door on a slight diagonal. It's only an odd jagged step if you walk like a robot, in straight lines along the wall, which is what your eye is doing on the drawing but you won't do in real life.

I am not sure you need to add a deck or raised paving, when there is a usable surface there already. You will have gained a closer connection to the living area, but you will be more exposed, both to neighbours and to the wind, for a significant cost. Raising the fence may break height restrictions, as mentioned, and will also really box you in visually, especially with overhead louvres. Those may feel too low over a raised area if at eave height, and if higher could look awkward against the house. The fence already shades the area alongside it, so I wouldn't extend any further shading right out to the fenceline. I would consider a shade sail before louvres, both for cost and for a lighter, less boxed in appearance. Is there access to bring in a large tree? A good sized deciduous tree positioned near the fence at the edge of the lawn may be a good way to get some attractive summer shade, autumn colour, added privacy and may be cheaper than a set of movable louvres! Below the new doors from the living area, create wide steps These could wrap around to meet the existing steps. Wide steps can become a casual seating area as well as create a connection to the existing paving, and they are less of a barrier visually than a small set of steps. They could incorporate a planter, which will help to soften an otherwise quite hard outdoor space. This would also allow the lawn to remain connected with the paved area, making it feel larger.

Thank you both for the suggestion I hadn’t seen how the extended bench next to the sink would look but in picture and plan that actually would work quite well weather we could fit an island bench in or not
This really does give us a something to think about in either case and we can work dimensions on the island with builder if it fits or if space is better utilised without it

another variation to consider with a servery to the outside entertaining area, two options for DW and i suggest that the narrow island could be interesting with open legs or 30cms deep knee spaces with or without shallow cabinets in the "left over space" eg behind the dw in the island there's space for a cabinet about 15cms deep, ideal for wine bottles
