Morning, thanks for the comments. My island bench is 3M long, see attached screenshots. I need to move the sink along to the left a little to give me a bit more room as I want to use the RH side of the island (when you're facing the island from inside the kitchen) for my preparation area and the LH side of the island will be for dishing up etc. Just not sure about the drainer and whether I need one. I think it may work if I do a double sink and have a drainer that fits in the second sink, only problem is if you need to rinse or drain something and you have your dishes in there?

if the island is 3m long and looks about 1200 wide then a 900mm wide sink with a removeable drainer centred along the working side will still leave plenty of prep space all around and you have an extra sink in the scullery for soaking but always depends on how you like to work not what's fashionable..

Yep thats true, I forgot that I've got a small sink in the scullery. I was thinking about getting a 2 drawer dishwasher also as I can always use one drawer at a time so I've always got somewhere to put dirty dishes. I think a drainer in a sink will be better than having the 2 sinks and then an on bench drainer at least you dont see the dirty dishes so much. Thanks very much for your help

Is your builder going to do your prep, dishwashing, cooking?
I would include the sink and drainer in your island, if that is what you are used to, and you will also be able to enjoy your view.
It is your kitchen, and should be designed to suit how you live.
I have always worked with a sink and drainer in the island. I stand at the island while working, and look across through dining and living at a wonderful park.

That looks great now I'm confused again, haha ! How long is your bench though, looks quite a bit longer than mine?

Two sinks a must 1 & 3/4 or 2 full, and a drain board my vote. I found the small 1/2 sinks too small to rinse plates and can’t put a large pot in it to dry. If you are doing a stone bench could go undermount sinks and cut grooves for drainage when needed. I also had a chopping board that sits on top of sink.
I also note that the drainboard can fit over the top of a dishwasher or drawers etc. so put sink where and how you want.

Thanks Kate, yep we are doing a stone bench and did think about the grooves for drainage but I dont really want an undermount sink as I've got 3 teenage boys and I guarantee the stone will be chipped around the edges in no time! I agree - definitely 2 full sinks Ive had a smaller second sink also and its such a pain not being able to fit a pot or something larger in.

Hi Vicki, research sinks as I purposely bought a 1 1/2 plus drainer, it's a square design and deep, the small sink fits most things, like dinner plates sitting under water. A big reason for my choice was to reduce hot and cold water needed to clean anything in deeper water in the half sink instead of filling the bigger sink when not necessary. I have also had two draw dish washers for years and find them so great, You could make your WIP sink one single larger sink, it's not under the window?

I would like to put if my two pennies worth too, please: And go back a step..... The scullery: you have a sink and dishwasher in there? If so why not have the 1 1/2 sink and drainer in there. On the island have just a little sink for rinsing veg, filling kettle, topping up saucepan, rocks for the scotch water supply but with no drainer in the island? Then the major dirties will go straight to the scullery and island sink is for smaller usage. And I would put it not right at the end maybe but towards the dining end to allow the longest usable bench for prep.

The design of the scullery does not seem quite right to me. There is a dead corner: yes I know that is one of my pet hates. But also is this going to be a pantry for store of foods and or do you envisage using it with appliances on the benches? If it is either of these do you want to dirties mixed with the food prep and store?

Solution: have two benches facing each other. the one backing bedroom(?) use for sink, DW and second 'frige. Separate.

The other for appliances on bench and food store above and below. I would incorporate the pantry cupboard into pantry room bringing the door along to the front of the main fridge. Then put the oven tower next in the kitchen: it is in a safer place and close by to mix master (on bench in pantry) for slipping a cake into! The high things are then altogether and the bench will slip down to the day bed being a more relaxed aesthetic. I know I hear it you want the cook top centred to look lovely! Possible you still can do that but as long as there is at least 1200 benching beside it for a USEFUl piece of bench.

Yes as someone earlier said you can use an under mount sink and have grooves in stone for drainer but I wonder about the cleanliness of the hidden seal. The stone will chip on the edges of the sink, the outer edges of the island and all benching if the boyz are not careful: a school ruler or wooded spoon handy for clumsiness might be a good disincentive for rushing!!

Hello Margo, I have to say that I have had a very similar discussion about Vicki's kitchen and how the Kitchen from the Fridge back into the WIP doesn't work as it should or could for better function. Sorry Vikki I know you only asked about your sink and wanting it in your island so that you can enjoy the view from that position while going about normal family functions including your 3 boys.

I think I missed a bit: If you have a dishwasher, you do not wash up! if it goes in dw & get ruined you didn't want it anyway cause it doesn't go thru dw. Anything that needs hand washing doesn't get used! End of story!! Ha Ha

Vikki without further floorplan and dimensions perhaps you could discuss with your kitchen designer making a couple of changes to what I think would make your kitchen work & flow better, A full height window at the end of the pantry gives space and wonderful light, I would also consider doing away with a door to the pantry and having your appliances on open shelves between the cooktop and second sink, just a thought that as I say I had discussed with a friend who is also a Houzzer, cheers
