COVID19 time put to use - please help with Master/Ens (& rest of house

Revisiting this - good opportunity whilst in COVID-19 lock down! Life got in the way as it does. Really keen to try and resolve the layout for Master Bedroom reno. Oklouise and others could I ask your thoughts please?

Updated thoughts on layout per rough sketch below. This room has raked ceilings and where the vanity is the wall is 240H and open above. Would like to drop ceiling above shower/toilet. Mainly to enclose shower to deal with steam. Wish I could enclose toilet without taking valuable robe space - ideas? Not sure there is room for a door.

Whole house plan below. Master is accessed via a breezeway from hall near bed 2/5. Only bed 2, 3, 4, 5, bath have been renovated to date. Main living incl kitchen, dining, family, lounge and funny little room adjacent to lounge to go. Will be asking for guidance on these also.

Hope you are all OK during this unsettling time. Good to focus on something positive for a break from the harshness of what is going on around us. Thanks everyone

It looks like you are trying to squeeze too much into too little space and bathroom privacy and functionality are compromised. It also looks like you have fairly wide eaves either side of the linking hall/breezeway. Have you considered widening this hallway and fattening it out to the full width of the eaves, then using this wider area for robes (with doors) on either side of the hallway. This means that the existing master bedroom pod could be re-organised for just an ensuite and bedroom.

the space you've allowed for the toilet should be at least 80cm x 80cm to allow for knees and elbow room but there isn't enough space to enclose the toilet and there's no standing room in front of the shower out of the traffic area and, attempting to keep the bed symmetrical in line with the ridge of the roof, continues to restrict the best use of the whole space as there's so many other options that provide a much more spacious master suite with more storage, enclosed toilet, enclosed shower, double vanities, more circulation space and this suggestions also allows for a much more open well ventilated vanity area and wiw with the shower enclosed under a lowered ceiling and the bed is centred under the highest part of the ceiling at right angle to the ridge of the roof and much more comfortable access all around the rooms

Thank you so much for your comment after all this time. The colour you have suggested brightens the front door area beautifully and if the two red pots were painted in a tone to match, we think it would look great. Not sure if you can get Crestview doors in New Zealand but there must be something similar. We like the idea of going away from another cedar door - mainly because it would stand out too much while it was weathering. I don't know whether we would have been that brave but the tangerine works so well with the jade green of the joinery. I have re-laid all the stones and put a new wider front step in. The timber colour will soften down in time. I put a big pot in the garden to draw visitors to the front door and have added some colourful bromeliads to the garden alongside the house to make the area a bit more cheerful. We can't make a decision about what to do with a larger 'overhang' to protect the front porch yet - it is a project in progress. Thanks again for your post.

I think the first layout is fine. You might want to consider moving the door for the storage room of the master bedroom so that it opens into the hall. That way the kids can use it for overflow storage. Also, that hallway is big enough that I think it could hold a large armour, providing more closet space. (There's no need to sleep in the same room as your clothes, so long as they're not too far off.) Also, don't forget that while the drawing shows kids in double beds, this need not be the case, so there will be more room for furniture (dressers or whatever) in their rooms. Finally, that step to bedroom 4 will not be odd at all. I've seen it in other homes. It looks clumsy in the drawing but it isn't. What you'll see when you come up the stairs is a bedroom door on a slight diagonal. It's only an odd jagged step if you walk like a robot, in straight lines along the wall, which is what your eye is doing on the drawing but you won't do in real life.

There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room. I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed. I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos. The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture. I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Get some real art in there with some color.

Your suggestions are really greatly appreciated. My town house unit is under complete exterior re-cladding works, prompting quite substantial interior makeover (i.e installtion of ducted air con, replacing wall to wall carpet with timber upstairs, and tiles in open space downstaris, replacing creamy wall paper will be replaced with neutral white paint. So my green kitchen with creamy formica counter (bench) top should go. I don't hate green simply had egounh of it after long 15 yeras! My small U shape kitchen is due for complete makeover, I think! I'll probably go with new cabinets (lower one for microwave) up to the ceiling, when move fridge at the end I'll go with panel with matching colour up to the ceiling, expanding counter top on the other side to the fridge. I guess that removal of the cupboard can be compesated with extension of the counter top so we can fit 3x drawer underneath and cabinets up to the ceiling can provide some useful storage space. Backsplash in same white palette or darker in contrast? Your kind ideas please!
