Judging from where the sunlight hits and the boxes are, it looks as though you could fit another slim -- laptop depth -- work area into the alcove to the right of the existing desk, as you mention kids, plural. What a lovely view for them to gaze out at while they think!

It also needs to stay with in the original footprint so their isnt much space to play around with

We have a large area under the spiral staircase which is under utilised. I have solved one area with a floating shelf but the main area directly under the staircase could do with something quirky and modern to stop our atrium from looking overly large and sparse. Any ideas out there?
