Storybook Designer Homes

Just want to contact someone who has built with Storybook Designer homes in recent years.
I can't find many reviews and if you contact them, you seemingly have to jump through many hoops to begin with.
I just want to see someone else's home first. The real deal.

My sister used a storybook kit back Int the 90’s with no probs. It’s still the same company so that bodes well. As it’s a kit the finished product is very much reflective of the actual builder. My sisters husband did the whole thing, with occasional help from family and mates. Best of luck.

I am in New Zealand , but I do own both New Zealand and Australian registered companies , which does give me access to Companies Office records in both companies . Without getting too involved , heres what I found in a quick search --

Phil and Siri Malcolm started a company called Early Settlers Cottages in 1983 ( 41 years ago ) . It went broke in 1990 . Phil Malcolm ( owner/director ) claimed difficult trading times as a result of the Keating government . That company traded for 7 years and seemed to have unpaid bills under $200k .

He wasn't banned from operating a company , and also in 1990 he/they set up Storybook Designer Homes . That operated until 2022 , and in the liquidators report they blamed Covid . Similarly , total debt appears to be around $200k . So this company traded for 32 years .

Again , in 2022 they arranged with the liquidators to buy the name and intellectual property of Storybook Homes ( they claim to have borrowed money off family members to pay for this puchase ) . This money went to the liquidators , who charge lots , but if there was any money left over , this goes to creditors ( normally the bank / staff / etc first -- the secured creditors ) .

They still trade as Storybook Designer Homes -- the company names are Storybook Timeless Designs Pty Ltd , and Storybook Construction Supplies Pty Ltd . A credit search shows these new companies have no outstanding legal issues -- if they owe money , it appears to be small amounts and paid in a reasonably orderly manner , if that makes sense .

If you look at things overall , the directors haven't been barred from opertaing companies , it appears they aren't making a huge amount of money , but also it doesn't appear that any of their customers ( homeowners ) have lost significant money .

If you are considering dealing with them , do the usual checks and don't pay too much money too far in advance , but to me , they do seem to be reasonably honourable if maybe a little financially naiive . That isn't a professional opinion haha , but from my 40 years in business , I've definitely seen worse .

That’s a great insight Pottsy. After many years on many house related forums I would say that there is a significant trend of bad reviews and troubles for Storybook. The product always looked beautiful and sounded good but the owners had a lot of troubled tales to tell.

Should be named Fairytale homes. Do NOT use!!! Multiple phoenixing. The unsecured creditors lost tens of thousands and not a cent has been returned or a peg in the ground. Liquidators are the only ones making money. They are not a builder so there is no insurance.
