Help! I can't choose a finish for our door hardware. My head hurts!
Hello lovely helpful Houzz community. We are in the middle of a full house reno and I'm stuck on our new door hardware.
The house is a gabled low-set post-war weatherboard home. We are renovating the original home in a mix of traditional and contemporary (traditional/colonial skirting, doors, cornices and architraves throughout, a hamptons/farmhouse style kitchen, with contemporary ensuite and bathroom). Once we've completed the original part of the house, we will be adding a contemporary extension. The outside house colours are Colorbond Surfmist and Monument, with black front door and entry gate, and the new contemporary extension will be in Monument.
We have chosen polished brass hardware for our front door, our kitchen has polished nickel fittings and tapware, our ensuite has chrome and white tapware and chrome fittings, and our bathroom will have brushed raw/living brass tapware and fittings.
I am lost now trying to choose the right finish for our interior doors. The doors are all off the one hallway leading to the bedrooms, bathroom and linen cupboard. Other than that, we will also be installing mudroom style cabinets in the entry (with handles of some description) which will be directly off the front door (which has brass hardware).
Do we put brass (or even antique brass?) throughout? Or polished nickel to tie in with the nickel and chrome in the kitchen and ensuite? I like the idea of a darker colour to compliment the white colonial doors, but I'm more concerned with flow. Any and all suggestions and advice will be so much appreciated. I am past the stage of mental burnout and so afraid of stuffing it up and our home becoming too "eclectic". I've attached some photos in case it helps. Thanking you in advance!

Comments (33)Thanks for posting new views of your room. You are right, nothing can go in front of the paneling, and we won't block the built-in cubby. In that case let's work with the rest of the space. I found a picture on Houzz for your gallery wall. I think this will allow you to bring in color and texture and interest to your wall without taking up space like furniture would. Try to play with portraits and a couple of paintings in there too - mix it up. Otherwise I would not put anything at the top of that landing (I'd remove that console table). That picture wall should be enough visual interest to your space and it'll draw the eye to the furthest wall as you walk in your house. I would try a small piece with closed storage between the bottom steps and that door by the entry. It looks like the space is no wider than 26", so it'll be a challenge to find something that fits and is tall enough. I would not use the wooden piece you showed above because you want wider proportions and fairly narrow depth so you don't bump into it as you walk by. (something like this ) I would hang a mirror on top of primping. By the cubby you could add a single seat stool. I'm not particularly suggesting these colors for the stool and bombe chest but something along these shapes. At this point if you do that big picture wall and add these two pieces of furniture and a mirror, you might not need to hang anything on the wall above the cubby. Also, I noticed your chandelier is quite substantial for the space and hanging pretty low. Comments (18)Hello Marcelle, I am an interior designer . I can tell you a simple inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen. Looking at the photo you sent the different cabinet heights , and all the objects on the stove wall are very busy . Your modern house is wanting a cleaner , simple look. I would lower the small cabinets so that the top is at the same height as the others in the room. And put doors on , that will hide the clutter. Next I would do a tile backsplash above the stove , up to the same height. The whole kitchen will be pulled together by the continuous top line. There is a small light wood cabinet with baskets in the foreground . I would paint it white , or the same dark accent color of the cabinets you have. Comments (39)Thanks Orangecamera. It's still a work in progress and mud everywhere Sorry we did look at having the steps' off set' but it didn't seem to go with only three steps and a small area. And about the zen well the cats are doing that for us much to our disappointment (it's still like a litter box to them). We went to the garden supply place still not knowing what kind of stones we were getting. We stood in front of all the bins (there where many). We even looked at mixing some. The grey stones had a bin more the size we wanted but we ended up getting the golden fleck. It was a little smaller, which was a shame, the bigger ones were so mixed in their grading it looked too messy. So this is what we finished up with. It was seagardens that got me thinking away from grey and nwduck mentioning the drainage. So this has really helped. Also everyone seem to think the wooden steps needed to go a lot lower. Actually been finishing our beach house re-build down here and a bit 'reno'd out' to be honest. BUT we head back in just over a month so it’s time I did give it some serious thought, so your comments very much appreciated. Already got builders organized so that’s a start LOL I love the idea of adding stone on the outside to the turret part – but guessing that is as far as the budget would stretch. The siding is in good shape so need to stain it to work. Love the idea of pulling a color from the turret stone to do this. Will get a stone that has some of the log house gingery color in it and then stain the newer part of house a tone of this?? So far I’m sure we will · Rebuild the deck to run across the front of the house and form the roof over the front door entryway · Make the entry way wider and mud room inside bigger · Replace the small window to the bathroom with a door off the deck, matching the French doors. · Replace the tiny window in the turret with a longer one. · Cover turret with schist or stone cladding Not sure about replacing the windows under the deck. Added a picture of them from the inside. This living space is the hardest to figure out how to furnish in this house. It has quite a lot of light from a large window on the left wall - out of this shot - and across the back of the room through a wide door way to the room at the back. Thinking of opening up this wall? And from the inside they seem pretty well balance? Big problem in that room is that there is not a lot of places that we can use to create a sitting area. Need to get a couple of sofas in there and push them around to see what will work. It has 4 doors leading off and as you can see large log posts dotted about!! ANDd a stairwell going down to lower level and garages. Not a lot of space to play with. OK time for another coffee...its 7.30am down here!!...See More

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoThank you for your suggestions everyone. @Audrey1967! I've attached a pic of the outside of the house. It's been painted but we will have to replace the roof when the extension goes on. The extension will be modern in Monument fibre cement cladding with a lot of glass (stacking sliders or bi-folds, fixed panels and louvres) and we'll flow similar colours through from the original house to tie it together. We have custom timber shelving/cabinetry in the ensuite and kitchen and will possibly put in the main bathroom too, which we will continue through to the extension in some form as well. We are replacing the old hollow plain doors with some antique cedar 4 panel colonial doors we found on Gumtree. All walls/ceilings/skirting/architraves will be replaced with new. We're putting colonial skirting/architraves through the original house and probably going with square set cornice and plain skirting in the extension. The brushed raw brass tapware has already been purchased and waiting for the main bathroom, so that's decision made.
@Michael Bell Architects Pty Ltd I think unlaquered brass will win in the end. We already have it on the front door and will be on the window hardware too. The kitchen and ensuite will just be their own little entities. Thank you for the "push" I needed. :)
