Updating facade - window and brick sill dilemmas

Hi all,

We are converting part of our garage into a bedroom and have decided to render the front of the property so that it looks more modern. We have a huge undercover outdoor verandah whichc an be seen from the font of the property and that has been painted in Colorbond Ironstone. As a result, we are thinking of using Surfmist render and retaining Ironstone for the windows, guttering etc. We will also lay more modern front porch tiles and possibly use stacking stone on the columns too. We also intend to replace the front door as it is very dated!

However we have two issues that I need some guidance for:

1. The two large windows at the front of the house. They were once Colorbond Ironstone colour but are now a faded blue-grey colour. Ideally we would replace each large window with 2-3 smaller ones to match newer house styles, however we haven't priced this up as we suspect it would be into the thousands of dollars and we are stretched financially. Is it possible to paint the window frames so that they are restored to their original colour? Does painting aluminium windows work and does it last?

2. We hate the brick sills below the windows. We realise that they are there for a reason, but we're wondering if there is some way to update them. For example, can they be cut back to a squared off finish? Or are they better rendered and then painted, either in the same colour as the render or in a contrasting colour?

Fingers crossed one of you can help me with this dilemma!

Emma
