What is the best way to clean shower grout?

Eveyone knows the "best" way to clean dirty, stained or mouldy shower grout. But what method really stands up to the test?

Some of the ones we've heard over the years include:

Scrub dirty grout using warm water and a stiff-bristled brush.
Spray with equal parts vinegar and warm water and wait several minutes.
Apply a baking soda paste and spray with vinegar.
Pour hydrogen peroxide onto the grout.
Apply oxygen bleach for up to 15 minutes.
Use chlorine bleach sparingly on grout.
Steam clean the worst of grout stains.

My hot tip is don't leave your bathroom uncleaned for weeks so mould can take a hold in your grout. It has to be there a long time to leave a stain. If you clean your bathroom each week with a grout brush you will never have a mould stain there. Mould actually takes several days to a week to turn black so you'd have to be leaving your bathroom unclean for at least a fortnight for it to ever look like this.

I've lived in many rental properties that rarely had new bathrooms in them. I've never seen grout stains as bad as this.

Toilet gel, along each grout line wait 10 minutes then scrub with a grout brush then wash off. Otherwise steam clean.

I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested.

Great home. I have an outdoor shower was I live adjacent to the beach but only ever use it to wash our feet. It is hard to keep the metals used maintained. I like the idea of being under the stars but in reality i think i would rather have a different vibe than an indoor bath. A spa or jacuzzi adjacent to a pool is potentially more social. Overall a nice extra but certainly not instead of an indoor bathroom especially in the winter time.

If it's brand new, have you tried asking the supplier what they recommend? We got a booklet from our supplier when we got new carpet with ways to treat various stains on that particular carpet. Each kind of carpet will be different. Also, have you tried a professional carpet cleaner? If all else fails, try your luck with your insurance company - I know others who have got carpet replaced because of bad stains - depends on your policy.

We have a 900x900 shower and it's plenty big enough. Neither of your proposed layouts looks that great, to be perfectly honest, sorry! In the first layout, you could improve it quite a lot by swapping the toilet and vanity (centre the toilet under the window on the bottom right of the picture if possible), and having the shower door on the other wall (beside the door). Then, you could have a towel rail on the wall beside the door (i.e. behind the door when it's open), which would be accessible from the shower but hidden when the door was open. An 800x1200 shower might be a good size for your space. You'd have to choose a toilet that doesn't protrude too far, plus a narrow vanity. With that layout, you could have a long but narrow wall-hung vanity, with a big mirror covering the wall between the windows, which would make the room feel bigger and would give a good amount of storage. Totally agree with Austere Hamlet if someone let their shower get as filthy as picture 1 no amount of cleaning solutions will help they will just go back to never cleaning just filthy 🤮🤮

Can anyone explain to me why white silicone sealer can't be used in place of grout?

If you masked either side of the grout line, inject it into the gap, and smooth into a concave shape with a finger wouldn't it be as good or better than hard inflexible grout?

Interesting question Jeff Leake.

Silicone is supposed to be used where the floor meets the wall anyway,. Not that builders necessarily know that, or maybe they just don't take the time?

Jeff Leake - they are used for different purposes, one is to seal awkward gaps and the other is a overall put it on and leave. Silicone is messier and more expensive and to use it the way you suggested would most likely take four times as long to place not including clean up. This in turn bumps the bill up four times. This along with other reasons i.e discolouration, cleaning, longevity, ease of use the cost of silicon vs grout, masking tape is why tilers don't do it this way. The more time they spend on one job means the less jobs they can do in a week which loses profits. Add on to this with the more costs involved upfront for a tiler versus what the client pays (sometimes clients hold out on payment) means they go into debt and cant pay there suppliers and workers. Hopefully this answers your question.

Macy-jean - Builders know a bit more than you might think and because a product says it does something does not mean it actually does it well or better than something else. They also know if it can be best used somewhere else with a better result. They always take time if something can cut down on time and money and can outlast another product in durability. 7 year warranty on builds means the less time they have to go back and fix something the more they save. Believe me they are always looking for something that cuts down on costs and time. They are also approached by different companies willing to give out freebies or competitive prices to try there product too and encouraged to endorse and switch other tradies to them also. This could be a longer conversation as there is more that goes into it but the short of it is Time and Costs.

Grout is one thing, but how do you clean mould that has developed underneath and in silicone??? Scrubbing hard seems to break down the silicone??
