900 might be a bit wide in some circumstances , but it depends if your fridge is deeper than your cabinets -- most fridges need 60-75mm more to allow for the door to open , and also you want air to circulate a bit , as well as the need to set the fridge in there when new .
If your fridge is say 100mm or more deeper than the surrounds , you may only want 50mm or so to look 'right' , but if its flush then 75-100 will work better .
Hi, you need to check if the fridge door opens within the width of the fridge or is hinged to open on the outside, makes a difference in the space you need to allow for the fridge as if its not wide enough you can't open the door as it hits the cabinet.
Your new fridge should last you 10 to 15 years depending on the brand. A 900mm wide opening will fit most fridges currently on the market with a bit of breathing space for ventilation around the edge. When you need to replace your fridge (or a new owner needs to put in their new fridge) the 900mm width will give you much more flexibility without having to adjust cabinetwork.
Hi Belinda X, if you are renovating your entire kitchen, it is best to get the cabinetry around the fridge to be sized according to the fridge manufacturers guidelines. Custom cabinetry makes a kitchen look more seamless and following the manufacturer's guidelines will ensure your product warranty is not compromised. However if your cabinetmaker only uses standard cabinets, make sure the measurements are within the manufacturers guidelines. Hope this helps!
I would suggest posting your fridge's brand and model #, then designer here is able to check the fridge intalling instrution, from where we could tell the exact open spaces requited for your fridge.
