Should I put in a hedge or a screen?

Hi everyone

A couple of years ago we redid our back courtyard. We have a beautiful mature laurel hedge on one side (left side looking towards the spa) that provides excellent screening from the neighbours. Privacy is important to us as we use our spa in the courtyard a lot. Unfortunately, the laurels have become continuously reinfected by thrips and we are going to have to pull them out.

The question is, what to replace it with? One option (possibly easiest) is to build a fence/screen with horizontal slats (to echo the weatherboards). That might bring a bit of structure to the space. But should I paint it a light or dark colour? Another option is to replace the hedge, possibly with pittosporum. In order to get good privacy, it will need to be at least 2.5 m tall (the garden bed is over a metre below the courtyard wall). I'm not sure I want to wait for it to grow tall enough and mature trees would be super expensive.

What would you do?

Thanks for your advice!
