Heritage Garden Internal Courtyard Garden - Before/After

ROCK OF AGES full design project sitting within the bones of a heritage restoration.

The client's brief was to design & manage a heritage restoration and create an organic oasis on the edge of the city, with a vertical internal garden and landscaped exterior courtyard, renovated kitchen and bathroom, add an adjoining new glass-roof atrium, transform the attic into a sitting room/office with a Parisian-style, rooftop balcony, and custom joinery.

This heritage three-story Sydney sandstone terrace had been somewhat neglected but had great bones. The client had a long wish list and wanted solutions that would work within the heritage build, whilst updating the space to suit a modern, dynamic lifestyle that breathed individuality.

The internal courtyard had a small footprint but was surrounded by soaring walls. These walls added a natural drama. The brick walls were painted in a drab grey with one wall being original sandstone. This space was to function as a green organic connection between the front living room and the rear kitchen. A vertical garden was a great solution. The courtyard is northeast facing and protected from the winds. A hanging wall of succulents was going to work best with the client’s busy work schedule. We wanted to make sure it was low maintenance and included an irrigation system to ensure its always would look pristine.

Above the vertical garden, we placed several stag horns which loved the location . We sourced a vintage whitewashed metal occasional table and 2x chairs. They were perfect for the space. The light framework are easy to move and visually work well . We painted the lack lustra brick walls in a fabulous green black which works beautifully with the organic colours and the sandstone wall.

The finished vertical garden has ascending rows of succulents in various tones of green, blue-green and burgundy. Set against the six-meter wall creates a dramatic sense of scale and spaciousness within the courtyard.
