ROCK OF AGES Create an organic garden evoking the magic of Marrakesh with an outdoor fireplace.

Perfect for entertaining, on cooler evenings with a custom design seating.

This project was a full design project sitting within the bones of a heritage restoration. Our job was not only to manage the heritage restoration but create an organic oasis on the edge of the city, a vertical internal garden and landscape the exterior courtyard, renovate kitchen and bathroom, add an adjoining new glass-roof atrium, transform the attic into a sitting room/office with a Parisian-style, rooftop balcony and all custom joinery, new kitchen and bathrooms.

This heritage three-story Sydney sandstone terrace had been somewhat neglected but had great bones. The client had a long wish list and wanted solutions that would work within the heritage build whilst updating the space to suit a modern, dynamic lifestyle that breathed individuality and would be suitable for entertaining.

The rear courtyard was dark, overgrown, and messy with nowhere to sit or entertain family and friends. The existing ground was covered with compressed dirt and bricks that were too uneven for a dining table to sit level. We trimmed back the canopy to create light and designed a new beautiful garden. The garden bed wall was sandstone blocks, which worked perfectly with the original interior.

We hung baskets full of succulents and ferns on the trees and boundary fence and placed stag horns on the bare walls. This softened and layered the garden as well as creating privacy. Privacy is always an important element to consider in the inner-city outdoor areas.

We tiled the ground with large formant neutral coloured exterior tiles so we had a flat base, along with building-wide steps that welcomed and lead to the garden.

The exterior lounge area is relaxed and comfortable with a centerpiece being the eco-smart polished concrete fire pit, which doubles as a coffee table. Perfect to create ambiance and warmth needed for outdoor entertaining in cooler evenings.

The rear courtyard is an organic garden evoking the magic of Marrakesh and provides multi-functionality by having the hardwood timber screens and a bench sofa on castors. This enabled the owner the option of moving furniture around and allowed her to park her car in the courtyard when needed. Large outdoor cushions were made and can be easily stored in the bench seat storage, along with the beautiful throws and other accessories that were selected.

Lighting is always important in outdoor areas to create ambiance. We designed custom copper lanterns to hang on the walls and placed garden spikes in the bed to create drama by shadowing a

texture.
