Fridge and pantry placement - help please!
Comments (12)Thanks :) All very good points. We thought about having the cabinet doors put in for the fridge but we personally haven't found them to be too practical in the past. Ones we've used haven't seemed to seal so well. We are also planning to upgrade the fridge in the next couple if years. Good thinking about placement of the microwave too. We have a power pack range built into the wall cabinets so unfortunately we can't put the microwave above the cooktop. I like the idea of the appliance cupboard being turned into a corner cupboard, although I'm unsure if that would mean that you then couldn't easily access it from the other side of the bench..? I'm hoping our kids will sit at the breakfast bar and make their own toast etc while keeping out of the kitchen itself.... I also wonder if we should have the wall cabinets all in the same line or if we could drop the usable ones, on either side of the power pack, down further to give us more storage....? And (I promise this is my last dilemma!) does anyone have any ideas on whether to place the 1/4 sink to the left or the right of the main sink? Again it's one of those things that I'm going around in circles about....next to the prep area vs next to the dishwasher.....? ...... Ahhhh decisions, decisions ;-) Thanks again...See MoreAny ideas on how to store bulk pantry items?
Comments (2)Yes, for that size I would look somewhere like Southern Hospitality who supply restaurants etc, https://www.southernhospitality.co.nz/categories/storage-shelving/bulk-containers.html or Stowers who supply plastic bins to may food industries: http://www.plastic.co.nz/plastic-products/pd-square_rectangularpails.html Check that the seal on the lids is suitable for long term storage, as you may have a slower turnover than restaurants would. Be aware that slides for pullouts carrying that sort of weight will be expensive. Another option is a floor level cupboard with bins on wheels for the very large and heavy items....See MorePlease critique our kitchen design
Comments (6)Thanks for your comments everyone. We've taken your advice (Luke and NH) and changed the island to a rectangle (1200 x 3000). We lose one breakfast bar seat but gain storage and dining room space plus it shortens the distances from the island to the cooktops. It also removes the need for a corner carousel. We're much happier with this result. Dairy_maid, we've done what you suggested and walked through some common tasks. Overall it works reasonably well although we may keep some coffee spoons and butter knives in the scullery drawers for morning toast and coffee. We've also invested in a "silent" rangehood which has the motor on the outside of the house behind the fridge and we've upgraded the scullery sink to one that is 600 x 400 (internal size). Fabrication starts tomorrow. Woohoo. Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. The design has been significantly improved with your input....See Moredesign change for walk in pantry
Comments (0)Hi everyone, Attached are a couple of screenshots of our current pantry and lower level design. What we are currently thinking of changing is moving the restroom further down the corridor to create more of a walk in pantry for additional storage and having a second sink and dish draw on the wall adjacent to where the toilet would be. Issue is that pantry is currently only 1024mm wide (walls are additional). We wouldn’t be looking for very deep storage and it would all be open shelving. The thing we are wondering is 1024mm wide enough or will we have to take a little bit from the kitchen to make it more functional? The main issue with taken more from the kitchen would mean that that piece of wall would not match up with the staircase width which it is currently designed to do. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice...See Moredreamer
