What can I do to update tv area instead of just plants?

Debbie JAMES

I have pretty much got all my other areas of my home finally how I want them and everything flows really well throughout my home. The wall and tv area I want to change as its pretty dull looking. Im not sure whether to ad another print on the left hand side of tv above the plants. I thought about shelves but we have a steel frame home

and anything we wanted to put on walls we had to have noggins put in. I do have a big print which is on the wall entering the family/dining room. The photos ive attached are the tv unit and print on entry wall the sofa opposite tv and the tv unit.

Hi definitely remove the x bars on the deck balustrade. Landscape close to the house so it grounds the house. Trees will make it look less bare. Chose some that work for your area, that are evergreen, and are not going to grow really big. With a really plain house - dark colors will make it look better. Dark Grey, or black with a warm tone so it doesn't have a blue undertone in it. Make sure it is a warm grey or black. Use green foliage around it. Paint out the pergola in the dark grey too or white if you want a different look. Fill in the balustrade where the x is removed with plants in front of those areas. Grow a vine up the pergola that is nice.

The fence will end up being a modern picket fence, We aren't sure if we should grass the two squares or plant it out, it's a nice sunny spot, but we have nosey neighbours that we are trying to make disappear, if then it becomes more private then a seated area could be really nice, Hopefully the right plants will work or we will have to go with plan B, of installing barbed wire and two wild Dobermans!

I grew up with these panel doors and remember the glorious day they were replaced by a curtain. So if you are open to the idea, for ease of use, least effort and cost that's a simple fix that your daughter may want herself. The top cabinet doors can be considered a cornice for the drapes, and can be upholstered, maybe in the same fabric as her window curtains, and a simple drape with coordinating stripe on the bottom. Search "upholstered doors" on Houzz, and you will see ideas for nailhead trim, tufting, etc as well. You may also be able to add thin trim molding in a custom design to make them special. Good luck!

Actually, just reread a bunch of the tile places and they all say not to use in shower. Bummer - that's out. However would still love ideas on what to do around it and if anyone can think of a way to update the acrylic walls? Or maybe it won't be as bad with new fixtures/shower curtain in better lighting... fingers crossed... just trying to get ideas together.

    Hi Debbie,
Maybe a lovely artwork is all you need then group your plants on the other side near window

Hi Debbie, attached are photos of both my sliding doors in our living area. One faces the front, the other to the side.
However, The sliding door stack to the side. You may need the curtains pulling to each side, since it appears your door is in the middle. But once the curtains are closed, you can not tell, where the join is. Photos are a bit dark, as the sun is still trying to get up between the clouds in Perth.

dreamer thankyou they look lovely. Ive

just emailed the company that installed all our curtains as the blinds sit on the door frame. Not sure if thats an issue? I think they will have to open from the middle. My husband isnt over keen but i think it will soften the room as at the moment im looking at dark grey colorbond everywhere.

Yes,mmmm, the blinds do sit above the door frame, I just looked at your photo. But see what the curtain specialists say. All the best.

julie herbert thank you for your suggestions love the prints and pots. have you got a link to the pots. My only concern about putting a print on the wall is the wall the otherside has my feature print. Can you have to much artwork within a space? i seem to artwork everywhere. Thanks for all the suggestion everyone. Will post a after photo once I finish updating.

The prints are from Etsy, I think if you chose an artwork in your beautiful colours in your house it would tie in beautifully, the planters are from On the side in St Kilda , but you could do the same with white planters, mask up to a geometric shape , spray with a colour and you will have a unique planter.

Other things you might consider, perhaps you already have a cabinet that you could update?

I think that the sofa isn't enough seating, a couple of wicker arm chairs even the alfresco ones that come in different colours very comfortable and light weight and affordable. Your dining table looks like a extension table so these additional chairs could double up as carvers when extra chairs are needed

differentways thank you for your suggestions you must have a great program for sketching out rooms. I used to have another single chair which came with sofa but it made the room look to congested. Also I had to move my table over closer to bench which then the light was not directly over dining table . My photos may give the impression the space is bigger. The distance from the floor rug is 118 cm to the dining chairs, would have to find slim line chairs for that space. . I’ve decided on getting sheers done first and getting a longer tv unit if I can sell this one. All my furniture is only a bit over two years old except my sofa which is 14 years old but still in great condition. I like the cabinet or shelve idea for the space next to tv as I could add color with vases, photos or a print. We do have another living room with ample seating if we do have guests which is quite rare at the moment plus an outdoor alfresco with plenty of seating. This area is mainly where my grandkids run a muck and have all their toys spread out.

Hi Debbie without having to break the bank you could try the following, to help declutter group your plants /small objects

Because your door opens in the center panel this gives you a great space in the corner for the chair (if you still have it they are quite large but should fit beautifully) add another lamp and plant to fit the space

You may need to move the console across the wall a bit and place your assorted sized and height pot plants at the other end of the console

I like floor lamp next to the Tv in the corner, all plants grouped together on the other side of the Tv . In the corner next to sofa a larger lamp table and a table lamp. Much bigger rug and maybe add 1 or 2 smaller armchairs facing the outdoor/ doors. Sheer curtain to match existing one is a must.

KK1000 thanks for suggestions Ive moved my rug around lengthways, its not wide enough but just to get an idea. Ive put floor lamp and big plant next to tv, brought in some outdoor chairs which are too big but just to get an idea of layout. Put another lamp from other living room again not quite right but gives me an idea. I dont mind floor lamp near tv.

well done the alfresco chairs are exactly as I suggested you try just a bit larger..Can you still get them. When a family member updated their family room dining chairs a few years ago we decided to go with the alfresco chairs for indoors and out, six chairs for each table which was so easy when more family turned up.Your small rug most likely works better with the Grandies traffic. You must be very pleased with yourself

It’s great to get heaps of suggestions but a bit confusing as well but I’m happy with lamp near tv, my sheer curtains will take about 6 weeks, and I will look at side tables and maybe another table lamp, plus 2 chairs maybe in a wicker.and a floor rug. Will be a gradual process.

sorry I didn't comment on your old rug before that it worked because it was smaller and the kids didn't transverse it to get to the outdoors

I guess now you have to decide to lay it so that the kids either walk across it or not, but then taking another look at the photos because of the position of the door it would be hard to keep the kids off the rug which ever way you would like to lay it do what works for you

I'm so glad you took my suggestion about putting sheers on the sliding door as well. The whole room looks wonderful. Well done.
Did you have to change the position of the roller blinds, or did the sheers go straight over the top of them? Excellent result.

Yes , I'm the weird one , but has anyone else noticed the irony ? The title says 'how do I update my tv area instead of just plants' . You start with a bland 'neutral' ( no colour ) pallette , then spend $1000's on a new , bland 'neutral' ( no colour ) pallette , then post some black and white pics . That was my first thoughts , until I did see some colour . Yes , the plants ! Yes , the same ones !

Obviously , everyone has different tastes .

pottsy99 I think your comments come across quite rude, Im not bright colors. The accent colors I like to add are blushes, grey, soft blues and soft green. The grey is the main color Ive used for carpet, sofa sheer curtains. i don’t like a lot of clutter. Everyone has difference tastes and styles. I don’t expect everyone to like what I’ve done that is not why I posted my photos. I was just showing what I have changed since my first post. I have listened ti a few of the suggestions from a few months ago.

  • C P

Pottsy, I would have thought by now that you would have realised that primary/bright colours (as frequently suggested by you) are often not that popular in the home as they tend to remind people of fast food restaurants.
Most people use a variety of textures rather than harsh colours to achieve interest in a space and this room has definitely achieved that. It is calm and well proportioned and looks lovely.
Man-cave chic isn't really all that popular for a reason. It's not very calming or engaging.

Your floor looks beautiful, my SIL found a great auction house in Sydney and bought her flooring through them for half the price, but they need to be conditioned especially with the high humidity before laying. Karndean are far less trouble. Are you looking to buy a Wicker arm chair. there are some beautiful ones and aren;t as bulky as others. Even Bunnings had a lovely chair for $2-300

As you guessed , I just express my opinion . Some agree , some don't . Some houses which I have sold 20 years ago are still in the same decor , other people may not have purchased . I prefer a planned colour pallette and something that has a Wow , and I definitely won't have the same colour walls and ceilings all through a property . Some fast food restaurants do have the same colour all the way through , but even they tend to have white ceilings or similar . I do have a ( small ) stainless deep fryer that does great chips though !

As far as texture goes , I 100% guarantee I would have more texture than this house , to use the obvious comparison . That is why , if you go back up to my original post , I suggested a feature wall of wallpaper , and a painting -- texture and colour . I don't like grey or beige as primary colours , and in fact don't consider them pastels either , but thats pointless arguing semantics .

I wouldn't have that combo , the OP would -- good on her . If houzz only had people that agree , it may be very boring .

I think you need not be so blunt how you express your opinions. I respect everyone’s own style and taste but would never be so rude and make comments as you have indicating I havent used color and wasted $1000. The colors I like are not bright they are soft pastel tones. I’ve got friends who have complete opposite styles to me but respect that is their style.

I'd put a timber lowline bookcase alongside the tv unit. it could hold magazines, coffee table books and even puzzles and board games. being a lowline case it won't overpower the room and will add some warmth.

alternatively a long wall hanging, could be nice, something in an interesting texture that goes with the rug. colour and style are pretty personal. It would break up the large expanse of bare wall, but is not as imposing as a framed print. On another note, I thought i should mention, you have a lovely home and you have arranged it nicely! Just thought I should mention.
