Agree. Live with it first it is a great space. But add some rugs to define a sitting area. I’d change the far end swapping the screen door for something less visible, changing out the panelling below the windows or painting it to contrast from floor and make it something you want to look at, or put some plants in front of it etc.

I'll post from the practical aspect . It is a concrete floor , with partial brick sides . So it would be difficult to demolish . It is described as Al Fresco , which is always intended to be indoor/outdoor . When it's cold , you stay inside , with the doors and windows closed . When its warm you open all of them , and as Dr Retro says , there may be a breeze .

It looks quite light , but that may just be the advert . It does look reasonably plain , and personally I dislike visible concrete joins . As Kate says , rugs will help , or maybe tiles or marine carpet or similar . I quite like the brick , but I'd tend to paint the uprights , from the bricks up to the top , in a charcoal so that the roof looks like it 'floats' .

If you want it to feel more 'indoors' and/or want to make it a year-round space , you can go with solid windows , but without roof and wall insulation , its always going to be colder than your main house in winter , and at that stage , you would be better to demolish the timber and screens and roof , but even then I'd have to ask why ?

You can get to the back yard presumably through the house and/or this alfresco space , and probably footpaths , so unless you want to park a boat or caravan , why spend $10k or more demolishing to lose 'partially' usable space ? Your house , your choice , but I would work with it personally .

Hi, thanks for responding to my question - we just want to bring it out of the 90's and try to disguise the fact that she's an old spec home, with some clean, simple upgrades...nothing that will date too fast or be cliche. The kitchen is first and foremost - I'd like to open up that whole space, perhaps by removing a wall or two, if they're not load bearing.

No ill-will intended but to me, the cream aluminium Spanline finish has a caravan awning feel. This room isn't something we'll be able to undertake straight away, I'd just like some ideas for down the track. It's the roof, specifically, that I'd like to do something with. I have contacted Spanline to see if they perhaps offer a refurb service...use the bones but maybe line the ceiling or something. I love the ceiling lining in that pic above. I'd really like to somehow make it feel more like a verandah, than a carport.

After a year living in the place ( as others have suggested ) you will know how effective the ( presumably perspex , maybe glass ) clear roof panels are , but to me , you'd want to retain those , so you can't/don't want to do a fully lined ceiling . The cheapest option would be material or canvas , leaving the clear panels open , and go for a tent/marquee feel ( have a slight bow in each fabric strip ) , maybe black , maybe striped canvas , maybe cream or brown . It would reinforce the outdoors indoors feel .

I'd possibly go a bit more upmarket though , and do ply panels , assuming they can be screwed on -- either varnished to show off the grain , or stained in whatever shade you want -- a redder cedar look , or a dark walnut or whatever you want .

That , of course , is assuming the height is what you want , and that the existing roof is in good condition . If you want downlighting it would be real easy to do LEDs , and run the wiring up the inside profiles of the existing roof .

It is a lovely big space. I would take the focus away from the ceiling by adding lots of potted plants in large style planters. Keep the furniture light coloured and add in splashes of colour through cushions and rugs work out a theme that brings it all together. Looks big enough for a breakfast table for when it is warm enough. Maybe a server through from the kitchen if it adjoins. Have fun!
